Happy Mother's Day!

Here's wishing, from The Garlic, to all the Moms out there, a very, very happy Mother's Day!

We know that;

Mother's Day is an annual holiday that recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well the positive contributions that they make to society. In the United States, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

[snip]

In its present form, Mother's Day was established by Anna Marie Jarvis, following the death of her mother Ann Jarvis on May 9, 1905, with the help of a Philadelphia merchant called John Wanamaker.[2] A small service was held in May 12, 1907 in the Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, where Anna's mother had been teaching Sunday school.[2] But the first "official" service was in May 10, 1908 in the same church, accompanied by a larger ceremony in the Wanamaker Auditorium in the Wanamaker's store on Philadelphia.[2] She then campaigned to establish Mother's Day as a U.S. national holiday, and later as an international holiday.[1][2]

The holiday was declared officially by the state of West Virginia in 1910, and the rest of states followed quickly.[2] On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and requesting a proclamation. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation, declaring the first national Mother's Day,[9][10] as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war.[9]

In 1934, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved a stamp commemorating the holiday.[11]

Here's a few Bonus Links you can peruse;

And, lastly, perhaps the greatest tune evah, written (and performed) about mothers.

As Wikipedia notes;
"Sweet Mother" is a highlife song by the Nigeria/Cameroonian singer Prince Nico Mbarga and his band Rocafil Jazz. Released in 1976, it remains one of the most popular songs in Africa.

Sweet Mother

It's not exactly a secret what jingoistic, unpatriotic cretins the Republican Congress is, be it the streamlining of the Bush Grindhouse lawbreaking, the crocodile tears of John Boehner, and not to mention the parade of sex scandals (where, there, they are fair and balanced, caught with men, woman and young boys).

But their obstructionism today reached new heights;

Republicans vote down Mother’s Day. No, really!

Have they no shame? Using mother’s all across America as a political tactic is pretty sad. Initially this resolution had passed unanimously, but maybe Rep. Tiahart just doesn’t like his mom. Dana Milbank says poor Boehner has been under a lot of stress lately. Yes he has, but to actually vote down Mother’s day?

You got it ... They voted against a resolution - one of those fluff things, with no practical consequences - to honor "Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day,"

Steve Benen, over on The Carpetbagger Report ("House Republicans take a firm stand — against Mother’s Day") has the right idea on this stunt;
As for the GOP’s opposition to moms, I wouldn’t be surprised if this little stunt comes up during the fall campaigns. Dems might not necessarily base an entire ad on a resolution vote, but I could imagine a Dem candidate saying, “Rep. Smith spends most of his time in Washington saying, ‘No.” No to quality healthcare, no to bringing the troops home, Smith even voted against Mother’s Day. Isn’t time we said no to Rep. Smith?”

Can't wait to see how Stumblin' Bumblin' John McCain mashes this one up.

And, of course, The Garlic has a suggestion for the Congressional Democrats.

Come Monday morning, they should have set up in the House, giant speakers, a sound system to rival the largest stadiums in the land, and through some type of procedure, to make the Republicans sit through it, blast Prince Nico Mbarga's classic tune, "Sweet Mother"

Would Fox Have Cut Her Off If She Started Talking About Loofahs?

Regrettably, I didn't catch the Emmy's last evening.

After the day I had, just anchored the sofa down, fighting off falling asleep to view Tom Brady, and the rest of the embattled New England Patriots utterly crush the San Diego Chargers in much-hyped rematch of last season's playoff contest.

And, judging by the news this morning, there were a small bit of fireworks during the broadcast.

After winning another Emmy, Sally Field, in paying tribute to mothers, had her speech cut off.

Seems that Fox just wants to give Cenk Uyger more ammunition for labeling them "opinion media".

Think Progress has the juicy details;

Happy Mothers Day ... And Let's Hear For Queen Noor!

Happy Mother's Day!

Hopefully, basking in the glow of the day will not involve under-cooked pancakes and spilling grape juice on your white comforter, with that traditional breakfast-in-bed.

However, the crayon-drawn, hand-made card just makes it all the better.

Quite a few good things out there, to celebrate Mother's Day, and bring attention to its' original roots, as well as a wonderful call-to-action.

On Friday (11 May), the ever-enchanting, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan was a guest on CNN's Situation Room.

In talking about the original roots of Mother's Day being for peace, Queen Noor spoke most eloquently on what's happening over in Iraq, Israel, the Middle East region overall and offered;

"... because they're -- well, they should, because the Prophet Mohammed -- peace be upon him -- once was asked by one of his followers, "Who is it that I should look up to the most? Who is it that I should give the greatest attention to?" And the prophet replied, "Your mother."

"And then whom?" "Your mother." "And then whom?" "Your mother." "And then whom?" "Your father."

"The prophet and his followers in early Islam placed enormous value on the role of women. Economically, socially and politically, they were given rights to contribute in a society that people were still struggling for in the West. That's been obscured by politics in recent times. But those are the facts of our faith."

"I firmly believe that peace will only come to the region when mothers find their voice and say of the violence, "Enough is enough!".
Queen Noor also has a Special Commentary posted on CNN.Com

Noor: Let's reclaim Mother's Day for peace

A number of steps down on the royalty ladder, our own historically-elected Speaker-of-the-House, Nancy Pelosi, picks up on the call for mothers leading the charge to peace.

Nancy Pelosi: As A Mother

Not bad ideas in the least ... Something that, well, would make a mother proud to see happen.
