Best-of-Day! ... Crimmins and Rich

The Garlic, ever endeavoring to bring you the best of the World Wide Web, is introducing with this post a new feature - Best of Day!

Be it a line, a headline, a passage, photo, etc, we will strive to bring it to you (which, as disclosure, will be based on available "bests", as well as our time, energy and reading/research).

It will be, as with other offerings (such as Good Post Alerts, or The Laura Bush Bummer Bombing-of-the Day Posts), from time-to-time, not an everyday-thing.

So, to kick it off, we turn to someone very familiar, and many times featured on the pages of The Garlic, satirist Barry Crimmins, who takes away the Best Line of the Day;

"Either Giuliani is waiting for the heat to blow over concerning numerous scandals that his felonious police commissioner, Bernard Kerik somehow neglected or Rudy is protesting the unfairness of his party's decision to hold all its primaries and caucuses on days other than September 11."

This comes from Crimmins' post today, "Crazy Dicks", which also offered another gem;
I can't do that because I understand a basic truth: he or she who wants to be in control is a dick and probably crazy. The premise behind most presidential bids is shockingly simple: I've looked at the entire world and there is one glaring problem-- I'm not in charge!"

And it's a day of riches (pun intended), as NYT columnist Frank Rich rings in with the Headline of the Day;

Ronald Reagan Is Still Dead

We can only hope - fervently - that the Writer's Strike ends at the soonest, and SNL gets back on the air.

What could be a better nod to their illustrious early, great years, then to lead off Weekend Update with Seth Meyers, excitedly exclaiming "President Ronald Reagan is still dead!"

Rudy, We Know Ye Way Too Much ...

Or, It's Time To Start Shoveling Dirt On The Body

I can't say I've come to bury America's 911 Mayor today ...

We already did that, last week, with our "Black Bunting and Chalk Outlines ... It's Weekend at Rudy's".

The corpse of his campaign, brought about by the dual, one-two legal exercises of A) the indictment of his former colleague, the once-upon-a-time Homeland Security Chief wannabe, Bernard Kerick, and, B) the lawsuit against Fox News by Kerick's former lover, Judith Regan.

What Kerick's trial doesn leak out all over Rudy, Regan's lawsuit will likely provide a strong following stream, being that her tryst with the Bernie Man, while he was tied-at-the-hip with Mr. 911, leaves a long, messy trails of condoms at Hizz Honor's doorstep.

So, the two latest bombshells, from yesterday and today, may merely end up as little more than shoveling dirt on the body.

Shovel-Full-of-Dirt #1: Giuliani billed city agencies for personal trips

It appears that Mr. 911 #1 Yankee Fan was billing the NYC for his tryist with his then girlfriend, now wife, Judith Nathan.

As Attyood noted, "At the time, the mayor’s office refused to explain the accounting to city auditors, citing “security ... The Hamptons visits resulted in hotel, gas and other costs for Giuliani’s New York Police Department security detail."

Or, put another way, Paul Kiel of TPMmuckraker offers "It's not much of a mystery why Bernie Kerik and Rudy Giuliani got along so well. They both showed a certain ingenuity when it came to leveraging New York City resources for trysts."

Rudy must be drooling at the thought of the carnal delights he could achieve if he were to reach the highest office in the land (We'll leave all the Washington Monument, Air Force One jokes to your imagination).

Shovel-Full-of-Dirt #2: Rudy's Ties to a Terror Sheikh; Giuliani's business contracts tie him to the man who let 9/11's mastermind escape the FBI

Wayne Barrett, of the Village Voice (who already gave us "Rudy Giuliani's Five Big Lies About 9/11") drops a ton of dirt on Rudy, detailing (really detailing) the self-professed counterterrorism savior's longstanding business relationship with the nation of Qatar, specifically, the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifah al-Thani, and Abdallah bin Khalid al-Thani

From Barrett's "Rudy's Ties to a Terror Sheikh; Giuliani's business contracts tie him to the man who let 9/11's mastermind escape the FBI";

"The contradictory and stunning reality is that Giuliani Partners, the consulting company that has made Giuliani rich, feasts at the Qatar trough, doing business with the ministry run by the very member of the royal family identified in news and government reports as having concealed KSM—the terrorist mastermind who wired funds from Qatar to his nephew Ramzi Yousef prior to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and who also sold the idea of a plane attack on the towers to Osama bin Laden—on his Qatar farm in the mid-1990s."

So, America's 911 Mayor's company is in bed with the people who aided Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, and who also are said to have hosted - in Qatar - Osama bin Laden.

Barrett notes how this isn't, exactly, breaking news, citing the Wall Street Journal report of November 7th ("Qatar Contract Offers Glimpse Into Giuliani Firm"), in which Ruppert's paper, almost euphemistically, notes "Qatar is a strategic U.S. military ally and energy supplier, yet also a country that has been criticized for its conduct toward al Qaeda -- a potential political pitfall for a candidate pitching himself as an uncompromising foe of Islamic terrorism."

Only
a potential political pitfall?

Could America's Mayor, so burdened, either from his tireless efforts to keep NYC safe, or his city-financed tryists, didn't know about Qatar's reputation? Was the blinding light of the burning bush telling him to run for President keeping him from seeing the news and documents?
"All of this evidence of Qatar's role as a facilitator of terrorism—reaching even to the emir himself—was reported well before Giuliani Partners began its business there "around 2005." Yet even the New York Times story, filled with quotes from Giuliani's friend Freeh, didn't deter him. Nor did the firm's retention of D'Amuro and Soufan, two ex-FBI counterterrorism experts who certainly knew the terror landscape of Qatar."

Perhaps, we will come to find out, this is the reason he pushed Bernie Kerick to be head of Homeland Security - he wanted someone in the inside he could give him fresh sales leads.

If the GOP/RNC doesn't join the crew in burying Rudy's campaign, it sure is going to be fun listening to how, in their blind rage to "beat Hillary", or their foam-mouthing, clawing, ends-justify-the-means, hypocritical ways, the Republicans embrace a nominee, especially a hawkish one boasting he's the chosen one to protect us from terrorists, that is lying, spread-eagle, in bed with terrorists and terrorist enablers and terrorist supporters.

Note: In a story from ABC that broke today - Giuliani's Mistress Used N.Y. Police as Taxi Service - Cable News, and print, have virtually ignored the storyline of Rudy's Terror Ties, focusing on the "sex" of his city-financed trysts, and, of course, the extended photo-op/sound bite production last night that was passed off as a "debate".

Black Bunting and Chalk Outlines ... It's Weekend at Rudy's

Oh, this is going to be so fun to watch.

Both Steve Benen, over on The Carpetbagger Report, and Greg Sargent, on TalkingPointsMemo's 'The Horse's Mouth', have excellent posts detailing the nations top tier "journalists", yesterday, on Meet The Press, lead by Little Timmy Russert, in going out of their way not to criticize America's 911 Mayor.

Misleading statistics were presented and, astonishingly, it appears this assembled mass of alleged reporters are going to wait, if at all, to begin looking into Ms. Rudy;

"If he is the nominee, time will begin again, the morning after. We will begin to explore the New York record, and debate it and discuss it in a way that we haven't so far."
So, their giving him a pass, until "he is the nominee".

Here's a big problem, beyond the obvious one of them continuing in their stenographer/lap dog ways;

The candidacy of America's 911 Mayor is dead!

The chalk outline is there, and the black bunting is on order, but It just may be awhile before the police and medical examiner get to the body.

That's due to the GOP/RNC getting into show business, running a casting cattle-call for the star who can "beat Hillary"".

And, they've decided on a national, dinner theatre production of "Weekend at Rudy's", with the party and the handlers propping up a dead body, all in the hope they can fool the masses that this is their guy.

If it hasn't happened already, ticket sales are beginning to sink, largely due to the party ignoring the two, bigger shows that have opened, and promise to be far more entertaining and engaging.

We speak, of course, of the one-man show, "Bernie Kerik - This Is Your Life" and the Judith Regan revival, "The Book Publisher Always Rings Twice".

We could say something about "The Great White Way" being lit up, but we run the risk of the Rightwing Freakshow taking it as a slap at the legacy of Ronald Reagan's racist policies.

But stay tuned.

All three shows are being run on both free and cable television, and while America's 911 Mayor says he doesn't comment on gossip, the reviews on his performance will be coming in at a steady stream.

That is, until the police and medical examiner show up to take the body.

It may then all switch over to Court TV, when it shifts into "Weekend at Rudy's II"

Something Rudy II ... Endorsements, Plugs, Unplugs and An Accolade (of sorts)

Perhaps, future political science courses may point to this past week of Rudy 9-11's campaign as the type of 1-2-disasters future candidates will want to avoid.

We speak of course of the curse-throwing, world-leader-hitman-wannabe Pat Robertson's endorsement, and the indictment of his crime-fighting Robin, Bernie Kerik.

And it had to be just a coincidence (wink, wink) that today, the Boston Globe, in their "series of occasional articles examining the 2008 candidates for president" features Mr. 9-11, in "Defining moments | Rudy Giuliani; Skills at ready when crisis struck", of which Jeralyn Merritt, over on TalkLeft, offers the choice excerpts in her "Rudy Unplugged".

But Rudy doesn't come away, completely, with a goose egg ... He does win an accolade, (of sorts), from Barry Crimmins, and it's the line-of-the-day;

" ...Giuliani now edges out Don Imus for the worst sidekick named "Bernard."
We shouldn't be surprised if it leaks out that Rudy threw his high-heel pumps across the room in frustration.

Extra! Extra! Crimmins Scoop On Giuliani!

Considering his record, I suppose it would be a bigger scoop if a day went by without a scoop on America's 911 Mayor.

But the ever-digging Barry Crimmins has come up with one, that is, how should we say, quite arresting;

We will all be there before (we know it)

Something Rudy

Something Moody, Something Moola

Something Rudy, Something Payola
And a silver-lined no-bid contract for Motorola

And this man, exploiting 9/11 like it was an entitlement, wants to be President? ... God Help Us all if that every comes to play ...

One thing that could put a dent in America's Mayor's balloon is this new video - The Real Rudy - from Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films.

This BNF investigative report calls attention to four key questions about Rudy's handling of the broken radios from firemen's families and experts:

Why was nothing done to improve FDNY radio performance for seven years after a clear need was demonstrated in the 1993 World Trade Center attack?

When new radios were finally ordered, why did the city block other companies besides Motorola from bidding on the contract?
Once Motorola was given the contract, why did its cost jump from $1.4 million to $14 million?

Why were these new radios never tested?

These questions should and must be investigated. New York City councilman Eric Gioia has the power to begin an investigation. If we can garner enough attention and signers, we have a major opportunity to help launch an investigation.

Check out the new video and use the links to sign the petition

The Real Rudy

Robert Greenwald does it again.

The site, The Real Rudy, is chock full of information America's Mayor is running - and lying - away from.

Glenn Greenwald (no relation) says of 'The Real Rudy';

"The Real Rudy," presents a truly devastating indictment of Giuliani's placement of New York City's Emergency Command Center in the World Trade Center ..."

"I believe, what appears quite clearly to be Giuliani's blatant and deliberate lying when asked repeatedly by Chris Wallace about what happened and why ..."
Check this out and bookmark it ... It will most interesting to watch Hizzoner clomp along the campaign trail with this around his neck.

Retro Rudy ... When The Emperor Has No Clothes, I Guess, We're Supposed To Compliment His Hair ...

Just last week, and earlier this month, The Garlic highlighted the shark-jumping abilities of America's Mayor.

Then, on Saturday, Alex Koppelman, of Salon, dug into Hizzonor's claim of his Ground Zero heroics, and came out with "After 9/11, Rudy wasn't a rescue worker -- he was a Yankee; Giuliani said he spent as much time at ground zero as many rescue workers. Where was he really? Much of the time, at baseball games."

Well, apparently, the shark handlers took umbrage to that characterization.

Joan Walsh has a piece today, detailing the blowback on Koppelman's "After 9/11, "Rudy wasn't a rescue worker -- he was a Yankee" from the National Review, and not one defender, but three;

When the National Review attacks

Not sure how that plays out for the Presidential Pennant Race, when you have to go three-deep into the bullpen to bailout a wannabe Yankee. It's more than probable that's there's a stadium-full of inimical press waiting in the on-deck circle.

Rudy ... You Like Jumpin' Those Sharks, Don't You!

Boy, oh boy ...

Less than a week after jumping over his first shark, Hizzonor, Mr. 9-11, is at it again ... This time, doing twirls, back flips, behind-the-backs, and one-handers, over a whole school of sharks ...

A whole neocon-drenched school of sharks ... Blood-thirsty, war-mongering, diplomacy-is-for-sissies school of sharks

He must be panging, for Stu Bykofsky's vision, of hoping for another Sept. 11th ...

To give you a glimpse of how bad it is, here's a snip of Josh Marshall over at TPM;

"...That a Giuliani foreign policy would best be described as Bush-plus and premised on the idea that President Bush has not pursued his terrible ideas aggressively enough."
In his essay, over at Foreign Policy, titled "Toward a Realistic Peace", Mr. I'm-One-Of-Them" sprinkling, liberally, his Nancy Reaganesque slogan of the "Terrorists' War on Us", puts the "You either with us or against us" on steroids, including dredging up "lessons from Vietnam" and waving the Bush Grindhouse's Fear Flag of "The consequences of abandoning Iraq would be worse."

It's a long, rambling, jingoistic, John Wayne jism of what will be his Foreign Policy, should the Red State voters not see through this one-trick-thrice-married pony and actually nominate him for President.

If you have the stomach, go read it ...

Move Over McCain, Rudy Says He Can Jump The Shark Better Than You!

This is going to be fun ...

Those GOP candidates, perhaps feeling inferior and insecure since the poll came out that indicated voters' first choice was "None of the above", are falling all over themselves.

We had Make-Up Mitt, this week, equate his sons working on his campaign as the same type of brave, unselfish service to the country as going off to war.

Pretty close to a shark jump, but, perhaps, more a foot-in-mouth gaffe along the lines of admitting you strapped your family dog to the car roof on a long road trip.

Back in April, perhaps the beginning of his campaign just starting to get drowsy, the suspended lull before the big nap, we had Senator John McCain's (R-AZ) shark-jumping moment, taking his Sunday stroll through a Baghdad market, declaring how safe and sane it was, but not really talking, and then making a fuss about it, as to his body armor and the gun-toting helicopter escort.

Now we have "America's Mayor" Rudy Giuliani slapping on the water skies and lining up that shark;

"I was at ground zero as often, if not more, than most of the workers. ... I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in that sense, I'm one of them."
Rudy, Rudy, Rudy ...

You might have just come out and bellowed "I am the great and powerful Oz!"

Or, are we saving that, almost fated moment, for Fred Thompson?

Keith Olberman Follow-Up: AAN Presents First Annual Molly Ivins Award to Keith Olbermann

The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN) announced today that MSNBC news anchor Keith Olbermann is the winner of its first annual Molly Ivins Award.

My, My, My ...

Who is Rudy Guiliani going to complain to now?

"Describing her own style of writing, Molly Ivins once wrote, 'Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful.' That's the sort of journalism we recognize today, that which holds those in power accountable in the court of public opinion," said AAN President and Memphis Flyer publisher Kenneth Neill. "Keith Olbermann speaks truth to power with wit and style, just as Molly did."

Minced Garlic - New Keith Olbermann Special Comment Slams Giuliani: "Republicans equal life; Democrats equal death?"

A Thread Of Garlic - Hey AP, Hands Off Olbermann!

As many of our readers know, The Garlic is an unabashed fan of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and the hero-anchor himself. With our Minced Garlic posts, we've highlighted his blistering, but very much needed, Special Comments (while adding in our own two cloves).

And you may be aware of the dust-up that began last week.

First, Olbermann layed into presidential wishful Rudy Guiliani, for his hijacking the Bush Grindhouse rhetoric of "vote Republican and you'll be safe, vote Democrat and you die".

This led Guiliani to complain to MSNBC, as to Olbermann's presence in anchoring on the coverage of the Republican Candidate's Debate and the charge that he is partisan.

This lead AP writer David Bauder to pen an article (MSNBC's Olbermann seeks delicate balance) suggesting that Olbermann is, indeed, not fair, that it is a source of trouble for MSNBC and, the whopper, of comparing placing Olbermann on the debate coverage is akin to the Fox News Network placing Bill O'Reilly similarly.

Olbermann and O'Reilly on the same level?

Okay, I'll wait for you to stop laughing and pick yourself up off the floor.

Riding to the rescue, among others, was Salon's Joan Walsh and Glenn Greenwald (who The Garlic highlighted last Saturday), with two great posts yesterday.

Check it out!

Minced Garlic - New Keith Olbermann Special Comment Slams Giuliani: "Republicans equal life; Democrats equal death?"

Maybe it was the couple of days off ... Or that baseball season is back ... Or, that he had to endure "America's Mayor" Rudy Giuliani for eight-years.

MSNBC Countdown host Keith Olbermann came out with a full head of steam with a new Special Comment this evening, "Republicans equal life; Democrats equal death? Rudy Giuliani exploiting fear for power and personal gain. A special comment about Rudolph Giuliani’s remarks at a Lincoln Day dinner in New Hampshire."

And it didn't take long for him to get the heat turned up - like, about 10-seconds into it;

"Only in this America of the early 21st century could it be true that the man who was president during the worst attack on our nation and the man who was the mayor of the city in which that attack principally unfolded would not only be absolved of any and all blame for the unreadiness of their own governments, but, moreover, would thereafter be branded heroes of those attacks ..."

Then, about a another 10-seconds later;

"And if you somehow missed what he was really saying, somehow didn’t hear the none-too-subtle subtext of “vote Democratic and die,” Mr. Giuliani then stripped away any barrier of courtesy, telling Roger Simon of politico.com:

“America will be safer with a Republican president.”

How ... dare ... you, sir?

“How many casualties will we have?” — this is the language of Osama bin Laden."

Now, something else is going on here, beyond Giuliani's pandering to the lowest common denominator (and do the heralded base Republicans really eat this up like happy soup? What fucking sheep they must really be if they do).

Bush and Cheney have been doing it the past week, or so. Now Giuliani.

Is Rove, and the RNC, spooked by the "lost emails" and the thought of getting their sorry asses hauled into a Senate hearing? Is the Lincoln Group and WHIG on Spring Break? Or are they just trying to save a few bucks by recycling old smears and spin?

"This is not the mere politicizing of Iraq, nor the vague mumbled epithets about Democratic “softness” from a delusional vice president.

This is casualties on a partisan basis — of the naked assertion that Mr. Giuliani’s party knows all and will save those who have voted for it — and to hell with everybody else.

And that he, with no foreign policy experience whatsoever, is somehow the messiah-of-the-moment."

Olbermann then skewers Giuliani, and the Republicans, with a gattling-gun list of "Which Party ... ", which I will let you read or watch (links below) to get the full effect.

"Call attention to the casualties on your watch, and your long, waking slumber in the years between the two attacks on the World Trade Center.

Become the candidate who runs on the Vote-For-Me-Or-Die platform.

Do a Joe McCarthy, a Lyndon Johnson, a Robespierre.

Only, if you choose so to do, do not come back surprised nor remorseful if the voters remind you that “terror” is not just a matter of “casualties.” It is, just as surely, a matter of the promulgation of fear.

Claim a difference between the parties on the voters’ chances of survival — and you do bin Laden’s work for him."
