Minced Garlic - Keith Olbermann New Special Comment On 'Beginning of the end of America'

For, on this first full day that the Military Comm
issions Act is in force, we now face what our ancestors faced, at other times of exaggerated crisis and melodramatic fear-m
ongering:

A government more dangerous to our liberty, than is the enemy it claims to protect us from.

On a day that found The Garlic into Day Thr
ee of a major allergy siege, nothing was more refreshing than, yet another, shining Special Comment by MSNBC’s ‘Countdown’ hero- - anchor, Keith Olbermann.

Tonight’s spot-on delivery by Olbermann was 'Beginning of the end of America', the absolutely black cloud of President Bush’s push and, now, signing of the Military Commission Act of 2006.

“With the distance of history, the questions will be narrowed and few: Did this generation of Americans take the threat seriously, and did we do what it takes to defeat that threat?”

Wise words.

And ironic ones, Mr. Bush.

Your own, of course, yesterday, in signing the Military Commissions Act.

You spoke so much more than you know, Sir.

Sadly—of course—the distance of history will recognize that the threat this generation of Americans needed to take seriously was you.

Olbermann, for the past week, or so, has done what our elected Congress has not done ... What our elected Senate has not done and what most of the free press here in America has not done...

That is, to point how, in getting his torture-authorizing, Geneva Convention-ignoring Detainee Bill passed, and the President’s boastful signing of it yesterday (in which, he continued to paint his lies, a subject of earlier Olbermann Special Comments - links below), how it not only denies rights to terrorists or “enemy combatants” but puts every single American in jeopardy as well.

As Olbermann bellowed a number of times, Congress, as well as a complacent media and population, has given the President a “blank check”

We have handed a blank check drawn against our freedom to a man who has said it is unacceptable to compare anything this country has ever done to anything the terrorists have ever done.

We have handed a blank check drawn against our freedom to a man who has insisted again that “the United States does not torture. It’s against our laws and it’s against our values” and who has said it with a straight face while the pictures from Abu Ghraib Prison and the stories of Waterboarding figuratively fade in and out, around him.

We have handed a blank check drawn against our freedom to a man who may now, if he so decides, declare not merely any non-American citizens “unlawful enemy combatants” and ship them somewhere—anywhere -- but may now, if he so decides, declare you an “unlawful enemy combatant” and ship you somewhere - anywhere.

And if you think this hyperbole or hysteria, ask the newspaper editors when John Adams was president or the pacifists when Woodrow Wilson was president or the Japanese at Manzanar when Franklin Roosevelt was president.

And if you somehow think habeas corpus has not been suspended for American citizens but only for everybody else, ask yourself this: If you are pulled off the street tomorrow, and they call you an alien or an undocumented immigrant or an “unlawful enemy combatant”—exactly how are you going to convince them to give you a court hearing to prove you are not? Do you think this attorney general is going to help you?

This President now has his blank check.

He lied to get it.

He lied as he received it.

Is there any reason to even hope he has not lied about how he intends to use it nor who he intends to use it against?

Minced Garlic: Another Stellar Keith Olbermann Special Comment - “A special comment about lying”

“In less than one month you have gone from a flawed call to unity to this clarion call to hatred of Americans, by Americans.

If this is not simply the most shameless example of the rhetoric of political hackery, then it would have to be the cry of a leader crumbling under the weight of his own lies.”

Geez, you would think, by now, that some of the other major media anchors would catch a clue, get a glove and jump in the game.

It’s almost become sublime, that even before the National Intelligence Estimate report was leaked, or before Bob Woodward’s ‘State of Denial” hit the bookstands, like everybody knew. Watching his speeches, seeing the sound bites, reading the newspapers ... it has been getting embarrassing. You just knew the President is lying.

Certainly they can’t that blind, can they?

Yet, even if the did, it’s doubtful they could measure up to MSNBC’s Countdown hero host, Keith Olbermann, who knocks another Special Comment out of the park, directly calling out President Bush. And on a day where our fearless Decider engages in yet another Signing Statement.

Tonight’s screed was “A special comment about lying; Keith Olbermann on the difference between terrorists and critics” and Our Man Keith took no prisoners (something, at minimum the President and his Neocronies could relate to). And he weighed into it, almost from the get-go.

“Yesterday at a fundraiser for an Arizona congressman, Mr. Bush claimed, quote, “177 of the opposition party said, ‘You know, we don’t think we ought to be listening to the conversations of terrorists.’”

    The hell they did.

One hundred seventy-seven Democrats opposed the president’s seizure of another part of the Constitution.

Not even the White House press office could actually name a single Democrat who had ever said the government shouldn’t be listening to the conversations of terrorists.

President Bush hears what he wants.”

This has been the S.O.P for Bush and his administration. Lie, lie often, lie loudly and keep saying it, over-and-over and, with the new twist Bush & Co. have added lately, admit the lie, acknowledge it, then, turn around, perhaps with a touch or rephrasing, and start repeating the lie all over again.

It’s nearly a parody of the late, great, comic/satirist Lenny Bruce, who advocated “Deny it ... They catch you in the act, deny it”

    More from Olbermann

It defies belief that this president and his administration could continue to find new unexplored political gutters into which they could wallow. They are, instead, solemn and even terrible quest

ions, about your fitness to fulfill the responsibilities of your office. You have dishonored your party, sir; you have dishonored your supporters; you have dishonored yourself.

    But tonight the stark qu
estion we must face is — why?

    And, after offering a killer quote, from General Tommy Franks, from Cigar Aficionado Magazine, of all places, shortly after he retired his post as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command in Iraq (“that causes our population to question our own Constitution and to begin to militarize our country in order to avoid a repeat of another mass-casualty-producing event. Which, in fact, then begins to potentially unravel the fabric of our Constitution.”), Olbermann throws it down;

“Mr. President, these new lies go to the heart of what it is that you truly wish to preserve. It is not our freedom, nor our country—your actions against the Constitution give irrefutable proof of that. You want to preserve a political party’s power. And obviously you’ll sell this country out, to do it.”

As The Garlic has said previously, it never was “bad intelligence” and it always has been, and, frighteningly, continues to be “bad ideology”.

Minced Garlic: Brand New Keith Olbermann Special Comment - End Of The Free Pass

Once again, the Prince of Cable News, the Pundit-With-A-Punch, came out swinging tonight.

MSNBC’s hero host Keith Olbermann delivered his strongest, most damning Special Comments this evening, in defending former President Bill Clinton, against the growing attack and pile-on by the Fox News and all those others who aren’t “Nazi appeasers”, but more so, calling - perhaps more than anyone in the media to-date has - our President out on his lies and deceptions.

Now on paper, in print, the question host Chris Wallace posed to Mr. Clinton, in an interview taped last Friday and broadcast this past Sunday on Fox News, looks straightforward and one that any journalist would ask.

But what it doesn’t capture is the smug, accusatory tone Wallace asked “Why didn’t you do more to put Bin Laden and Al Qaeda out of business?", and followed with a longer set-up to drive home the point he was apparently trying to establish, being that September 11th was Mr. Clinton’s fault.

The former President responded, defending himself and his administration, and doing so strongly and forcefully.

For that, Mr. Clinton was described as “crazed” and the he “freaked out”.

    To which Mr. Olbermann offers;

Our tone should be crazed. The nation’s freedoms are under assault by an administration whose policies can do us as much damage as al Qaida; the nation’s marketplace of ideas is being poisoned by a propaganda company so blatant that Tokyo Rose would’ve quit.

Olbermann then lays out the case against Bush and his “gang that couldn’t lie straight” Administration, and the escorted, free pass the Congress and media of this country has given our great Decider.

Moreover, for the last five years one month and two weeks, the current administration, and in particular the President, has been given the greatest “pass” for incompetence and malfeasance in American history!

Olbermann then added that Bush was “our worst presidency since James Buchanan” before heralding former President Clinton with “He told the great truth untold about this administration’s negligence, perhaps criminal negligence, about bin Laden.

And, with the Midterm Elections roughly six-weeks away, Olbermann isn’t fooled (nor does he want any of us to be) by the “smearing by proxy” and, what must be absolutely coincidental, the reshaping and rewriting of our history with dealing with Osama bin Laden and Sept. 11th, placing the blame at the feet of Clinton and his administration.

A week or so ago, we had the Disney/ABC, two-night extravaganza of "The Path to 9/11.", to which Olbermann offered “Disney was first to sell-out its corporate reputation, with "The Path to 9/11." Of that company’s crimes against truth one needs to say little. Simply put: someone there enabled an Authoritarian zealot to belch out Mr. Bush’s new and improved history.”

Now followed by the Wallace/Fox News slap, and, apparently today, or very recently (with Olbermann holding up a folder or book), an increase in RNC Talking Points pointing at Clinton.

But funny thing, as detailed in an earlier story of the same broadcast, the news of the National Intelligence Estimate report that cites it was and is the Bush-led invasion and occupation of Iraq that is fueling terrorism, not what was sold to this country (and the world) that we had to go into Iraq to get the terrorists.

With Bush and his Administration still tying in Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda (and they do it so deftly, as earlier in the day, on Hardball with Chris Matthews, in an interview with Fran Townsend, DHS Consultant, Townsend, when pressed by Matthews, concurred, as President Bush admitted a few weeks ago that Iraq had nothing to do with Sept. 11th, she followed that with the “everyone agrees that Saddam was a threat” thereby preserving the lie), Olbermann pulls the curtain back, exposing Bush and his Administration for what they are - liars and the purveyors of a style of government most un-American.

We have,” Olbermann lamented to President Bush, near the end of his Special Comment, “nothing but your word, and your word has long since ceased to mean anything.”

Perhaps Mr. Olbermann, or better yet, our Congress, will stand up and get the answers, and hold those accountable for their actions.

It never was “bad intelligence" and it always has been, and, frighteningly, continues to be “bad ideology”.

Minced Garlic - New Keith Olbermann Special Comment - Bush Owes Us An Apology

MSNBC ‘Countdown’ host Keith Olbermann knocked one out of the park again last night, with a Special Comment - again - taking on this country’s “Decider”.

The apology is demanded (and should be demanded by the entire country) out of the speech and press conference our Court Appointed President gave and held last Friday in the Rose Garden.

"Mr. President, former Secretary of State Colin Powell says the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism," he was asked by a reporter. "If a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former secretary of state feels this way, don't you think that Americans and the rest of the world are beginning to wonder
whether you're following a flawed strategy?"

“If there's any comparison between the compassion and decency of the American people and the terrorist tactics of extremists, it's flawed logic,” Bush said. “It's just -- I simply can't accept that. It's unacceptable to think that there's any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United States of America and the action of Islamic extremists who kill innocent women and children to achieve an objective.

Of course it's acceptable to think that there's "any kind of comparison."

And in this particular debate, it is not only acceptable, it is obviously necessary, even if Mr. Powell never made the comparison in his letter.

Oh, the irony of this man telling us “not to think”, after this same man bragged that he had a “Ek-a-lec-tic” reading list.

The irony, of how after telling us “not to think”, he goes on to, vehemently, demand Congress give him the authority to bypass the Geneva Conventions, to give him the authority to continue to torture suspected terrorists and criminals, or he’ll take his Neocon ball and come home, closing down the CIA interrogation program.

I don’t believe we can construe that the President was telling just Congress “not to think” - they did that long ago.

Here’s hoping that they pick up the call from Olbermann and also demand an apology - either before or after they pass the Detainee Bill that doesn’t authorize torture, that doesn’t bypass the Geneva Conventions. Either before or after they pass a bill that will, ultimately, be just a first step in repairing the damage this Bush Administration has inflicted on the United States of America and the world at-large.

This Time, Slapping Down The Decider, Himself

He didn’t get around to his version of “my sister, my daughter” until near the end of the speech today, going heavy with the early stages of linking Al Qaeda with ... drum roll, please ... Iran (okay, act surprised if you run into him)

President Bush today continued the latest theme, speaking before the Military Officers Association of America, a deck so stacked it would have made Huey Long tear up with pride.

The theme, of course is All Things Nazi!

Okay, we all know, by know, what Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld spewed last week (Oh no, I’m appeasing right now) , comparing critics of the Administration, and/or the War In Iraq as the equivalent to the appeasers of the Nazi’s ...

    Soooo... The Decider not only echoes his underlings conflation of the Nazis and Al Qaeda (and let’s not forget all the other Islamo-Fascists) with this head shaker;

In the 1920s, a failed Austrian painter published a book in which he explained his intention to build an Aryan super-state in Germany and take revenge on Europe and eradicate the Jews.

The world ignored Hitler's words, and paid a terrible price.

And, in case you didn’t get the message about staying in line, Bush and his White House Neocronies threw a “Shout-Out” to the “media”, to choose their sides and write carefully, declaring

“...Bin Laden says that Al Qaida intends to launch, in his words, a media campaign to create a wedge between the American people and their government. This media campaign, bin Laden says, will send the American people a number of messages, including that their government will bring them more losses in finances and casualties. And he goes on to say that they are being sacrificed to serve the big investors, especially the Jews. Bin Laden says that, by delivering these messages, Al Qaida aims at creating pressure from the American people on the American government to stop their campaign against Afghanistan ...”

About the only thing missing from this latest Bushapalooza is a flicking montage of film running behind the President (or, whoever is the Designated Goosestepper of the Day), the images of the Pentagon, World Trade Center Towers, that ubiquitous Al Qaeda Training Film, Osama bin Laden, the dead portrait of Zarqawi, Madrid trains, London buses, USS Cole, burned out embassies, shredded Hummers on deserted Iraqi roads, etc, et al.

All of these images, but quick-cut with pieces from various works by “that failed Austrian painter’sfilmmaker, Leni Riefenstahl and, just to keep the connection going, they can title it “The Triumph of the Coalition of the Willing” (come to think of it, they can appeal to the real fringe right, as this would evoke “The Parallax View” as well)

    Some of the gems of Olbermann’s ever passionate and eloquent response;

The attempt to link, by the simple expediency of one word—“media”—the honest, patriotic, and indeed vital questions and questioning from American reporters, with the evil of Al-Qaeda propaganda.

That linkage is more than just indefensible. It is un-American.

Whatever the true nature of al Qaeda and other international terrorist threats, to ceaselessly compare them to the Nazi State of Germany serves only to embolden them.

It thus becomes necessary to remind the President that his administration’s recent Nazi “kick” is an awful and cynical thing.

Minced Garlic - Keith Olbermann, Paul Rieckhoff and Larisa Alexandrovna Expose Bush Giving Aid To The Enemy

"One of the things that did happen today that concerned me was that during Bush‘s press conference, he actually showed a graphic that showed 24 urban military outposts in downtown Baghdad ... Our enemies aren‘t stupid. They can look at that and figure out a grid coordinate and try to drop mortars on those exact locations ... "

All the spin, the smears, the lies, the attacks on anyone who opposed the Great Decider, labeling them as giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

When an opponent does, they're a Nazi Appeaser, or worse.

When Bush, or one of his henchman do it, why they are supporting the troops and fighting the global war on terror.

It was an unguarded, unprompted, unplanned moment last Friday evening, on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was interviewing veteran, veteran advocate and 'Chasing Ghost' author Paul Rieckhoff regarding the continuing growing scandal over the death of Army Ranger Pat Tilman.

Near the end of the interview, Olbermann ask Rieckhoff to comment on the Harry Reid "The War is Lost" statement made in the Senate the day before.Rieckhoff briefly addressed that and then turned to the bombshell of President Bush, complete with slides, showing off military position around Baghdad at a speech in Ohio.

Larisa Alexandrovna, of at-largely, and also an investigative journalist, essayist and poet, managing news editor of Raw Story, and contributor to Alternet, and The Huffington Post, picked up on it as well.

"My good friend Paul Rieckhoff just made an interesting point on Countdown regarding a speech given by the Decider today. I had not noticed this, but apparently our beloved leader put a big red X on where US are positioned in Iraq, showing once again that his version of supporting the troops is at best political theater and at worst, dangerous to our national security."

Minced Garlic ... Keith Olbermann Special Comment - Feeling morally, intellectually confused?

All day today, after hearing about, and reading, the latest “fear-o-grams” from President Vice President Dick Cheney, and his Vice PresidentSecretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, I could feel another “Garlictorial” percolating - That is until I watched MSNBC’s most prized program - Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Hence, only Minced Garlic, since the main focus of the post will be Olbermann’s eloquent dissertation.

Cheney and Rumsfeld... Jeez, there are infomercial actors that have stronger morals and higher ethics regarding what they will say on-camera then these two cretins.

Excluding the first 5.5-years of this Bush Administration, we’d have to go back quite a ways (Nixon Presidency? ... McCarthy?) to find an elected, sitting Vice President and a sitting Cabinet member of the United States utter such un-American speech

I suspect it will be tomorrow, or later, before the transcript of Countdown is posted, however, on his Bloggerman Blog, Olbermann has, essentially, the entire tome posted.

    He kicks it off with;

The man who sees absolutes, where all other men see nuances and shades of meaning, is either a prophet, or a quack.

Donald H. Rumsfeld is not a prophet.

    Read it for yourself

    Feeling morally, intellectually confused?

P.S. To borrow from Olbermann and Countdown, if there was a “Best Person In The World” segment, Mr. Olbermann, you would have to be the recipient of it tonight.

Minced Garlic - New Keith Olbermann Special Comment: Lessons from the Vietnam War

Jeez, it seems like everyone is taking The Decider to school this week.

We certainly did here on The Garlic, with the results of our Week Garlic Poll.

And there certainly are a growing chorus of voices chipping in and crash-cramming this man with what he needs to know.

With James Baker’s Iraqi Study Group, the White House’s own taking a gander at the situation and now the Pentagon offering their military version of Manny, Moe and Jack, it’s beginning to look like a pilot for a new, Saturday afternoon, PBS gameshow - “Quick, Quick, Somebody Give Me The Answer.”

And tonight, our Ace Anchor Hero Keith Olbermann, of MSNBC’s ‘Countdown’ program, grabbed him by the scruff of the neck, slammed him down in the seat for yet some more teaching - Olbermann’s Special Comment “Lessons from the Vietnam War.”

    One of the gems Olbermann pointed out, the great and rallying wisdom offered by our Court-Appointed President;

“We’ll succeed,” the president concluded, “unless we quit.”

Sounds like something out of his “Hello, I Must Be Going” policy he launched last month. Pity slogans certainly haven’t been in short order for this administration, or was he just channeling Dr. Henry “I Never Met A War I Didn’t Like” Kissinger (with due credit to satirist Barry Crimmins)?

If that’s the lesson about Iraq that Mr. Bush sees in Vietnam, then he needs a tutor. Or we need somebody else making the decisions about Iraq.

Mr. Bush, there are a dozen central, essential lessons to be derived from our nightmare in Vietnam, but “we’ll succeed unless we quit,” is not one of them.

Olbermann lays out the lesson, with accuracy and fact, not something particularly known for by the Bush Administration and, you can tell from the tone of his voice, Olbermann isn’t confident the pupil will get the lesson, or act on what he learned.
