Or. Blowback's A Bitch
We hit on the Le Affair Edwards the other day, and I honestly didn't except to be returning to it so soon.
There's still, either a few more details to come out, or an Imelda-Marcos-like avalanche of shoes to drop.
Seemingly, in the past day or two, it appears the MSM, now that Edwards did his "I'm Guilty ...But I'm Not" interview, is less interested in the former Senator, and now aiming their notebooks at Lisa Drucker, aka Rielle Hunter, the self-styled femme fatale in this saga.
And, boy, there be some bizarre shit flying out of that closet!
It's not that Rielle is a New Age disciple, or the much publicized former gal pal of author Jay McInerny, according to ABC, "A party girl named Lisa Druck whose exploits in New York's cocaine-fueled nightlife during the 1980s inspired "Bright Lights, Big City" author Jay McInerny to model a character after her in his fiction."
No, No, No ...
This is one family's closet that may, very well, qualify for 'Riply's Believe It or Not'
Mister Sandman, Bring Me A Dream
And if you can't do that, make sure you show up with the wires and jumper cables."Good God! John Edwards was having sex with the daughter of the guy who taught Tommy Burns how to kill horses by electrocuting them!"
This comes from a fascinating article, "Edwards' 'other woman' revives memories of a gruesome scandal", by Lester Munson, with William Nack.
It seems that Little Lisa, aka Rielle, once owned a horse, a show horse.
Little Lisa's Daddy, James Druck, who was describe as "a criminally minded lawyer and conniver", at least, at one point, was in need of some serious moola; When Jim Druck got strapped for cash, he tried to sell the horse; but the top offer was only $125,000 and the horse was insured for $150,000. You do the math; Druck did. So he talked Burns into killing the horse and showed him how to do it, revealing himself to be a man of some experience in this venal backwash of animal husbandry. Druck then bought Burns all the paraphernalia he needed, from the clips to wires.
Da-dah, a legend grew, with Burns going on to garner the nickname, "The Sandman".As one prominent West Virginia horsewoman told me, "When Tommy arrived at a show, they would say The Sandman was around. They knew a horse would be put to sleep."
Hmmm ... Was Tommy Burns hanging around the Edwards campaign?
Probably not, however, by hooking up with James Druck's daughter, Rielle/Lisa, and then lying about it, Edwards should give a spiff to The Sandman, for the self-electrocution of his reputation and character.
Go read "Edwards' 'other woman' revives memories of a gruesome scandal", by Lester Munson, with William Nack, it is amazing.

Garlic Exclusive! Edwards Affair Solved!
He's an Anglophile!

He's pinin' for Camilla!
Not twins, but pretty darn close ...
I mean, look at the photos ... Around last call in a dark bar ...
Perhaps he didn't realize that Camilla isn't the royalty, so his road to become King was about as long as his lies.
Maybe, because it's August, the Dog Days of Summer, the lull before the conventions, that Le Affair Edwards isn't going away.
MSNBC's 'Hardball' (David Shuster subbing and slamming) and Dan Abrams have been hitting on it all weekAs a sidebar, last week, one grave-dancer that I must point out was MSNBC's Mike Barnicle, who was sitting in for Tweety on 'Hardball'.
Barnicle, with each of his guests, couldn't use the word "hypocracy" too often enough (I double-checked the listing, to make sure I was watching 'Hardball" and not a new MSNBC Doc-Bloc, 'Hypocracy').
Why this is pertinent is that Barnicle was tossing his boulders of "hypocracy" from a glass house.
Barnicle has had his own waist-deep dive into human weakness, being his often, and repeated, skills of plagiarism and fabrication (read "Barnicle resigns from Globe; Fabrications found in 1995 column" and Salon's "Repeat Offender; Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle's active imagination finally brings him down")
And, just yesterday, the king of the Right Wing Freak Show came through, showing just how low in the gutter they could take this.
Now, I am not an advocate of lying and, as a matter of disclosure, here on The Garlic, we were, early on, rooting for the Edwards Team (that meaning, including, perhaps more-so, Elizabeth), so, like the many others, there was great disappointment (and not that a politician had a mistress. No Puritan fibers here ... Europe hasn't done too badly, hasn't fallen off the face-of-the-earth, with their history of their leaders sleeping around).
So now, it remains a waiting game, to flesh out any more lies by Edwards, not to mention the $64,000 question on the paternity.
And all that money being tossed around, to make sure Lisa Drucker, aka Rielle Hunter, isn't out in the food stamp line.
The bigger mystery, perhaps, stands with who took and released that photo, allegedly of Edwards, holding the baby?
It's not exactly like they were having this "catch-up" meeting out in the main lobby.
And that some are saying Rielle Hunter's sister went out of her way to dismiss that Hunter was setting up Edwards as a mark;Hunter's sister said Rielle was being falsely portrayed as a "promiscuous person" and was not involved in "setting up" Edwards last month at a Beverly Hills hotel, where he was confronted by reporters from the National Enquirer.
Perhaps not, or, as Newsweek's Jonathan Darman described Hunter as a "New Age" person, maybe Hunter is just trying to share John Edwards' "financial energy".
Needless to say, this story will continue to have a trickle, at minimum (hey, The National Enquirer, now that they are getting kudos from the MSM on being right, certainly isn't going to give up the bone).
And it's still a story in need of an ending.
- That John Edwards is the father of the child, making him a triple, scumbag liar (1. The affair and lying about it, 2. Using his wifes' cancer remission as an excuse)
- It surfaces that Hunter was setting him up (perhaps as far as the sperm-in-the-freezer-turkey-baster thing)
- The National Enquirer dumps Edwards, clears him by dropping the bombshell that the baby is an "Elvis Love Child"

Please, Someone, Help Howard Wolfson Pull His Head Out of His Ass
Well, I guess it wasn't the sexism, the media, and all the Hillary-bashing afterall.
Hillary Clinton lost because John Edwards lied.
At least, that's the latest coming from former Clinton mouthpiece, Howard Wolfson.
From ABC News;"I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would therefore have been the nominee," former Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson told ABCNews.com ... "Our voters and Edwards' voters were the same people," Wolfson said the Clinton polls showed. "They were older, pro-union. Not all, but maybe two-thirds of them would have been for us and we would have barely beaten Obama."
As The Wonkette pointed out;Of course, then there are “facts” like these: “[Obama campaign] officials never bought the argument that Clinton was the second choice of Edwards voters. Immediately after Edwards dropped out of the race at the end of January, Obama won eleven straight contests in a row.”
Nate Silver, in his "Why Howard Wolfson is Out of a Job" notes; As such, Iowa pollsters did a lot of work in trying to determine voters' second choices. And in virtually every survey, Clinton did rather poorly as a second choice: an average of several surveys in December showed that she was the second choice of about 20 percent of voters, as compared with 25 percent for Obama and Edwards (an even later version I have sitting on my hard drive showed the second-choice breakdown as Edwards 30, Obama 28.5, Clinton 23.5)
So the odds are that, if John Edwards had dropped out on the morning before the Iowa caucus, Obama would have won by more points rather than fewer.
I guess Edwards didn't get the memo.
As part of Hillary Entitlement Campaign, Edwards was duty-bound to either not have had his cheating affair, or, as soon as he did, he was required to fess up, bow out of the campaign, and demand all his supporters move over to Hillary.
Edwards needed to, before he informed his wife of his infidelity, and before he aided his wife in her illness, he should have been working 24/7 to secure the nomination for Hillary.
Jeepers! ... No wonder she went down in flames ...
Nobody was following the plans!
How the hell can you feel you are entitled to the nomination, and then have all these people dropping the ball?
What the heck is our political system coming to?
Perhaps Obama, or certainly Howard Dean, and others in the Dem Leadership, need a sitdown with Her Highness.
With Wolfson's babble, and all the talk of parades, rallies, a "cathartic roll call vote", the Grand Central Station Locker Creatures ("Hillary is back! The keeper of the light! All hail Hillary! All hail Hillary! Oh Hillary can you see by the dawn's early light...") are still holding on to the pipe dream that "something" is going to happen in Denver, and Hillary will emerge victorious, with the nomination.
It's over! ... Give it up! ... Hillary Lost!
Thomas Schaller, in Salon has it succinctly; The macro reasons for Hillary's loss are still the same: They underestimated Obama, they didn't have a plan for winning delegates in caucus states, and they were caught flat in the period immediately following Super Tuesday. None of those fatal errors can be attributed to illicit affairs covered up by a supposedly complicit media or anything else Edwards, Obama or any of the other Democratic contenders did or did not do.

The Longer Morning of a McCain Presidency
Prom Dress Boy is at it again.
In a one-paragraph post, he disparages Barack Obama, Deval Patrick and John Edwards, senselessly, without any context.
The Long Night of an Obama Presidency [Jonah Goldberg]Reading this piece about the Edwards endorsement of Obama, a cold shiver went down my spine. As scary as a Deval Patrick appointment as AG would be (I've long thought he would be Obama's likely choice), the suggestion that John Edwards would be even considered for Attorney General is horrifying. I really can't think of any mainstream political figure more inappropriate for that job than Edwards.
Hey PD Boy, why is it "scary" and why have you "long thought" Deval Patrick would be Obama's choice for Attorney General?
Was it he was a competent Assistant Attorney General during the Clinton Administration?
Or is this just a little Right Wing Freak Show race-baiting?
As to Edwards, a successful trial attorney, I would get more than a cold shiver down my spine if (and that is a monumental "IF") Stumblin' Bumblin' John McCain were to be elected, the nitwit shittrain he would place in that office.
Considering the two Crony Generals of the Bush Grindhouse - the former, Alberto "Huh?" Gonzales and the current, Michael "See No Torture/Hear No Torture" Mukasey - not to mention the overall lawlessness of this current administration, I don't think you RWFSers' should be picking up stones to throw.

Exclusive: Edwards Endorses!
This hot news comes today from Barry Crimmins' website, and it's pretty funny ...
Crimmins, along with Randy Credico and Richard Corey (son of the legendary professor, Irwin) , were the ones' who got it up
Check out Exclusive: Edwards Endorses!
And speaking of John Edwards, there sits a great deal of irony, that, while he was valiantly campaigning, the MSM either ignored him, or derided him ... Now that he has bowed out, they are now foaming-at-the-mouth about who Edwards will endorse, who the Edwards' voters will support ...
Paul Krugman has a good column on it today
And Jill, over on Brilliant at Breakfast really nails it
For future generations, and political folklore, for leaving his mark, perhaps, we'll have to place "Edwards Was Here" with the same stature, as "Kilroy Was Here" from Tom Brokaw's favorite time, a few generations ago ...

Thank You, John Edwards!
Well, I guess our call to "Ring A Bell Today For John Edwards" fell silent ... Or, as with voters, just not enough bells were rung.
News jawdropper this morning is that John Edwards will announce this afternoon that he is exiting the campaign for president.
It became an enormous, uphill struggle, battling against the two, pockets-stuffed-with-money, mega-deathstars and you don't win the nomination with only third-place finishes.
And the road ahead promised more of those.
Logan Murphy, from Crooks and Liars;"John ran a good campaign and vowed to stay in it all the way to the convention, but apparently that’s not going to happen. John’s populist message scared the daylights out of the wealthy elite and the corporate media, which ultimately hurt his coverage. We wish him and his family all the best.
Steve Benen, from The Carpetbagger Report;"First, Edwards exits with his head held high, knowing that he ran a strong, uphill campaign, which drove the Democratic message more than a lot of people realize. I’m reminded of this recent piece from Chris Hayes.
Yes, with his head held high, Mr. Edwards may be dropping out of the campaign, but I doubt he will exit the stage completely, carrying on for the causes he believes in, surely to make a difference in the long run, surely to continue the fight to make the world a better place.
No matter who wins the Democratic nomination, the fact remains that the Edwards campaign has set the domestic policy agenda for the entire field. He was the first with a bold universal healthcare plan, the first with an ambitious climate change proposal that called for cap-and-trade, and the leader on reforming predatory lending practices and raising the minimum wage to a level where it regains its lost purchasing power….Ultimately, though, the Edwards campaign has been both a campaign and a cause, with the latter outperforming the former. Few remember that the signature economic policy of Bill Clinton’s presidency, balancing the budget, originated as a plank in the platform of his primary rival Paul Tsongas. If the next Democratic President manages to pass universal healthcare or a carbon cap-and-trade, we’ll owe the Edwards campaign a significant debt."

Ring A Bell Today For John Edwards ... Let's Give Him Some Wings To Carry On Good Fight With ...
"Well, I've said too much. I . . . You're the Board here. You do what you want with this thing. Just one thing more, though. This town needs this measly one-horse institution if only to have some place where people can come without crawling to Potter ... "
Boy, it we want to run with a "It's A Wonderful Life" theme today, with John Edwards starring as George Bailey, we have to do some serious script doctoring.
We will need to write in two Mr. Potters!
I tuned in for a debate last evening and all I got was this lousy car wreck.
It was "Rock'em-Sock'em" robots last evening, in South Carolina, during the CNN Democratic Debate, and the Rock'em-Sock'em robot with HRC on her warm-up cape clearly got the shot on the jaw that had the other Rock'em-Sock'em robot's head shoot off its' shoulders.
And Obama's people may have some trouble pushing that head back down, to keep on fighting (or, better said, to begin raising his ire, as well as his political fists)
Someone needs to sit down Barack Obama and explain that he's in a presidential campaign - and he is, presently, running against The CLINTONS (and yes, both of them).
Someone needs to explain that he only won the Iowa Caucus, not anything else, so the construction plans for that new, Utopian political landscape have to be kept on hold.
That someone needs to say again - and really accentuate - that he is running against THE CLINTONS!
Hunter S. Thompson, in his laser beam, spot-on "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail", about his view of the 1972 Presidential elections described the ego of a man running for president to that of "a moose in heat".
Well, there's two moose out there, ramming their antlers against anybody and anything that looks to be in their way on calling 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home again.
And, in this rewrite of 'Wonderful Life', we have to flash way forward, and bring in a denizen of the future, something no one would ever dream to set foot in Bedford Falls.
For, it hasn't taken long in this campaign season for Hillary to reveal herself ... She tried the weepy thing in New Hampshire, and, for whatever gains that got her, it's not the right fit
Much like one of those machines in the Terminator movies, her skin started melting off last evening, revealing the steel frame, the death-focused machine, pounding, relentlessly on Obama, on his Illinois "present" voting record, his connections to a Chicago slum landlord, his (and still unbelievably) embrace of the late Gipper, Ronald Reagan.
And, clearly, almost tauntingly, defending her husband's spirited entry into the primaries, giving no indication that she plans to call him off (despite the DNC calls to play nice and have Bill go off and act like one of those lame presidents from that dreadful movie "My Fellow Americans").
Again, someone mention to Obama that he is running against THE CLINTONS!
They don't run away from blood, they look to draw it out ... They thrive on it ... They wade in it, take showers with it ... Drink it, so they can go out on the campaign trail and get some more ...
This isn't work for the Clintons, this is fun ... This is relaxing to them, as comfortable as sitting in a big, leather Barker Lounger on a lazy afternoon ... Forget gardening, or Sudoku, just give'em a political office to run for ...
And the more Obama whines about it, the more they will hit him ... And hit him ... And hit him ...
Hillary, from the beginning, has looked at the Democratic nomination and, eventually, winning the general election, as her entitlement, not a process she would actually have to work to attain.
So, that alone, has the Clinton's pissed off.
But Obama is a gamer, and in marching forward, singing about his own destiny to the White House, he goes and panders in Nevada, perhaps talking loudly so as to be overheard in neighboring California, reaching out to, maybe, pick-up a few independents and left-leaning Republicans, stomping on the Clinton Legacy, blowing kisses towards Reagan.
That bought Obama nothing but bringing a red-faced, steam-coming-out-of-his-ears, husband Bill into the mix, and, with the success they have had, he's in it to stay (and, if you want to see just how The Clintons outflanked and kicked Obama's ass in Las Vegas, you need to read Al Giordano's "Nevada: What Really Happened at the At-Large Caucuses?")
This goes all the way through Super-Duper Tuesday and into the convention.
If Obama doesn't know by now, that he is in a scratch-your-eyes-out fight, just follow the trail of his blood all the way to Denver, where Bill and Hillary will be waiting for him, fingers and lips stained red, looking for more.
John Who?
So, where does that leave our guy John Edwards, that "one-horse institution" of this years campaign?
The MSM has written him off (and last Friday, the Edwards' team released a most amusing video on it), Lawrence O'Donnell has done a smear job on him and all the pundits, when they do the election math, there's no slide rule calculations for Edwards sitting on the table, at least, none with his name on it.
With the historic opportunity to elect the first woman, or first black, to the office of the President, it certainly doesn't bode well for Edwards.
Despite the above-referenced battle being waged between Obama and THE CLINTONS, it's far to big, to far up the ladder, for Edwards to sneak in there - unless, miraculously, an unprecedented, Howard-Dean-Ned-Lamont-stars-aligning-just-at-the-right-time grassroots movement rises up, takes over the process and writes its' own, dynamic history.
I don't know about Obama, but I feel certain, The Clinton Machine won't allow that to happen.
However, if such a star-aligning movement wants something to put a stake-in-the-ground with, they got that today.
In an extraordinary letter, Martin Luther King III has urged John Edwards to stay in the race and carry on the legacy of his father;"…I appreciate that on the major issues of health care, the environment, and the economy, you have framed the issues for what they are - a struggle for justice. And, you have almost single-handedly made poverty an issue in this election.
(You can read the full text of the letter here)
...So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud."
If you didn't have the jarring foghorn, that raging conflagration of the Obama-Clinton battle, King's letter to Edwards is nearly tear-inducing, painting just as good, if not better than the sketching of Obama, as to where the political debate should be - not about tearfully finding one's voice, or idol worship of the piece-of-you-know-what the 40th President of the country was.
So, to bring us back to our Edwards-as-George-Bailey theme, we turn to the under-the-weather daughter, Zuzu;ZUZU: Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.
GEORGE (smiling) That's right, that's right
Ring a bell today for John Edwards ... Ring a lot of bells, so he can grab a pair of wings, and, as he has done so far in the campaign, go way up there and align those stars himself, and carry on the good fight.

Clinton Camp, Burnishing Her Experience Resume, Claims David Bowie Song "Changes" All About Hillary
Looking to batten down the hatches, before the Obama wave crashes over them, Hillary Clinton's campaign came out swinging today, dropping a bombshell in an attempt to continue her Saturday Night Debate theme, burnishing her experience credentials'.
David Bowie's song "Changes" was written for, and about, Hillary Clinton.
"Hillary was already battling, and bringing about change when Barack Obama was only changing his diapers," boasted Mark Penn, Clinton's chief pollster and strategist.
"Bowie recognized, early on, Hillary as an agent for change", Penn continued. "He wanted to do something to honor that, to pay respect to it, so he wrote that snazzy song."
"He had a vision, an artists' eye, on how caring and unselfish a politician Hillary would be."
Penn claims it was originally titled 'You're So Change", but that Bowie retitled it, after hearing that Carly Simon was working on an idea, eventually coming out with her hit tune, "You're So Vain".
In just a few days, since her third--place finish in the Iowa Caucus, and her defensive posture last Saturday evening, in the ABC Debate that saw saw Obama and John Edwards shine as much, if not more, than Hillary, the Clinton campaign has had to quickly revamp their efforts to avoid Hillary being pegged by the media as part of the "status quo".
Polls released today show Obama gaining strength, catching a bounce and leading by 10-points in one, 13-points in another.
Penn ignored questions from reporters, citing President Bill Clinton, and his using Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop" as his theme, when he ran for President.
Penn quickly sniped "Good band, good tune, but they didn't write that specifically for the President."
Penn also downplayed the incident today, of Hillary weeping or crying during a campaign stop, quickly dismissing the Muskie comparisons, indicating "she was thinking about the song, it was playing in her head, all the change she's brought about and it touched her."
Rachel Maddow, Air America host and MSNBC pundit said that "it was too early to say if Hillary was crying."
Plans, according to Penn, included having the Bowie tune "Changes" blaring at her campaign appearances and, sources say, efforts are on-going to get Bowie to come out, tell the story himself and publically endorse the junior Senator from New York.
Penn would not confirm plans for a Facebook collaboration of a "Changes" party, with Hillary appearing, dressed as Bowie and singing a specially-written version of "Changes", that would include a list of her many accomplishments of leading change.
Asked how relevant David Bowie would be to the youthful Facebook audience, an artist that hasn't had a hit record in years, and, in 2004, only placed 39th in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Penn would hear none of it.
"We'll just chalk it up to another "change" accomplishment on Hillary's resume."
When reached for comment, an Obama staffer chortled at the news and offered that it "sounds like her campaign is stuttering, just like in the song."
