As Steve Benen, over at The Carpetbagger Report asks (rhetorically) "Where does the Bush gang find these guys? Hacks ‘R Us?"
Our "Shocked, Shocked" recipient today is none other than State Department Inspector General Howard L. (Cookie) Krongard, who came oh-so-close yesterday of jumping the shark, nearly denying he even had a brother.
Actually, it ended up playing out more like the old SNL bit - "It's a floor wax and a dessert topping" - with Krongard finally fessing up that "Yes he's my brother and he's on the Blackwater board".
Appearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee yesterday, who is looking into Krongard's possible criminal conduct regarding - and here's the "Shocked, Shocked" part - of burying/stonewalling/looking the other way (we're flexible, you call it what you want) investigations into Blackwater, for gun smuggling and, just how they got their golden egg contracts over in Iraq.
The sibling tango began when Krongard was hit with the info, surprise, surprise, that his brother - the former CIA official Alvin B. "Buzzy" Krongard - is currently a member of the Blackwater Worldwide advisory board.
After volleying (okay squirming) denials, Krongard finally broke down into the Chinatown scene, with the committee slapping him around and Krongard blubbering yes "he's Blackwater and my brother!"
The high drama continued to play out late in the day, when Brother Buzzy told TPMmuckraker, about Brother Cookie; "I told him I was going on this board. He claims I didn't tell him," Buzzy Krongard says. "So what can I tell you?"
And lest you think Cookie chills out after hours, check out Barry Crimmins and "It's Just Krong", which details "Think of it, the Inspector General, a man who is supposed to be beyond reproach, has been caught shaking down his own children!"
Sign these guys up for a reality show, they'll make the Osbournes look like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.
Linkfest Below
Stay tuned on this one. This could play out, in the Bush Grindhouse Hall of Fame, of polishing Michael "Heck-of-a-job" Brown's apple - at least Brownie didn't have an Inspector General brother who's about as straight as a corkscrew.

Yet Another "I'm Shocked ... Shocked To Find Gambling Going On Here ..."
Jeez ... They're not even trying to hide it, to act surprised ... Make an effort at not being blatantly overt ...
In our latest installment of "I'm Shocked ... Shocked To Find Gambling Going On Here..." (Second one this month), the Bush Grindhouse is up to it's usual tricks ...

Worried Bin Laden Urges Iraq Insurgents to 'Unite'
That's right, boys and girls, just as The Commander Guy digs in to batter the Congress again with his Invasion and Occupation Funding requests, right off the presses comes a brand-spanking-new Osama bin Laden tape.
And we have to give the spinmeisters some credit ... They're updating their fearmongering ...
Since we've been beaten over the head, via the PetraeusReportPalooza, on how the surging is working, and things are getting better in Iraq ... And those little bon mots tossed around last week, with no real ownership, but just enough oomph to get it in the headlines, on how AIQ, to use the lingo, is all but vanquished ...
So, they can't have OBL (more lingo usage) spouting off with new threats, boastfully. They've gotta have him sweating ... Nervous ... And, as you see above, it's a "Worried Bin Laden" today ...
I can just picture Cheney, and Hadley and assorted other Neocronies, sitting around, putting the finishing touches on it."Concerned ...Let's say he's concerned"
"No, Mr. Vice President, we need something more telling ... Remember, the surge is working, we've got them on the run."
"You're right ... You're right ..."
"Let's say he's worried ... Worried conveys just enough weakness that our people can embellish on, in the PR's, etc ... We can tweak all the numbers to show that he has cause to be worried, etc ... Let's us show our strength ... "
And then they all clink their Caffeine-Free Diet Sprite cans together in a toast ...
I know it’s a week early, but much like when the little children come around in their Halloween costumes (rumor has the "No Health Insurance" is the hottest get-up), try to act scared and surprised ... You want to make them feel good.

Nice Little Piece of Jazz History
Well, I don't know about you, but I certainly could enjoy a respite from the cacophony of blowhards, in Day Two of the A.I.G. conflagration, that even, if he were still around, the legendary Red Adair would find it difficult to cap.
Quite a bit of fulminating, by far too many people that are in desperate need of a tailor.
Those on the Obama Team, and in Congress, have been caught with their pants down, and can't say "I'm shocked ... shocked to find gambling going on here ..." fast enough, or often enough, over the Always Incredibly Greedy bonuses.
Go out to Memeorandum for all of that.
We, here, offer you a wonderful oasis to get away from it all, found on Open Salon (to which, The Garlic, has staked out a little piece of turf, primarily, for cross-posting purposes).
Writer Rebecca Clay Haynes has penned "Dropping Bombs with Kenny Clarke", a nice little piece of Jazz history, on the legendary drummer.
Clarke had an incredible arc, of both pre-and-post Bebop, playing with all the cats and giants of the times, a majority of his career spent in Europe.
If you don't recognize the name, singularly, you may know him from the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, a monster group that was a bit under-the-radar, but, certainly, well critically-acclaimed (and they were as tight as Ellington or Basie).
A few snips from Haynes' "Dropping Bombs with Kenny Clarke";When I taste madeleines, I remember sitting at the feet of the great jazz drummer, Kenny Clarke, in his modest living room in Montreuil-sous-Bois, while his wife, Daisy, plied us with those fluffy scallop shells.
It's a good read, a small window, in a smaller time machine, of a piece of Jazz history.
As a starving young journalist, I'm sure I ate more than my fair share.
[Snip]
But the "most enjoyable moment of playing jazz for me was with Dizzy Gillespie," he said. He had known Dizzy since at least 1940 but he said that "the big band he brought to Paris was the most fantastic and stimulating band I had ever played with. It was so advanced, so new, so, ohhh."
[Snip]
Despite his own failing health at the time of our interview, Kenny was still teaching drumming at schools and conservatories in Paris and throughout Europe.
He also played "from time to time" at Le Dreher, a popular jazz venue on the Place Ch âtelet in the heart of Paris. I went to hear him perform in that cramped, smoky subterranean club, several winding sets of stairs down into the ground.
Go check out "Dropping Bombs with Kenny Clarke"
And, here's a video, of the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, circa 1970

Blackwater Going All Prince On Us (But You Can Pronounce The Name)
Who knows, if Prince (the musician) had picked out an esoteric, but pronounceable, name, how many more albums would he have sold?
And, I am quite sure the irony, of changing your company name, to that of a 1969 film of the same pronunciation, one about political murder, a government overthrown, with the rightwing across-the-board working to cover it up, is totally lost on them.
But that is exactly what Blackwater USA is doing
Meet the new company - "Xe," pronounced "zee."
From Noah Shachtman, at Wired's Danger Room; For the last year or so, Blackwater Xe has been moving away from its core business of diplomat protection, and into -- well, just about everything else, it seems. Firm CEO Erik Prince has put together teams of spies-for-hire. The company is pushing ahead with plans to protect commercial ships, traveling through pirate-packed seas. And in case that doesn't work out, the company is making custom rifles, marketing spy blimps, assembling a fleet of light attack aicraft, and billing itself as experts in everything from cargo handling to dog training to construction management. It's even training pro athletes.
Shachtman was also a bit disappointed, that Blackwater, err, I mean Xe, didn't take his advice, as to changing their logo to his "Hello Kitty-style logos".
From USA Today's "What's in a name? Blackwater aims to bury its past with a new brand"The company was founded in 1997 by chief executive Erik Prince and former Navy SEAL colleagues. They named it for the swampy black streams around Moyock, in northeastern North Carolina.
Hmmmm ... I don't know about this, we all remember the "New Coke" fiasco.
Wonder what the folks who run XE — "The World's Favorite Currency Site" — think about Blackwater's name change?
Xe is also the chemical symbol of Xenon, a colorless, ordorless, heavy "noble gas" used in powerful lamps.
Final note: Wikipedia tells us that "xe" is a gender-neutral pronoun, neither male nor female.
Zachary Roth, over at TPM Muckraker notes also; They've also renamed Blackwater Lodge & Training Center, the subsidiary that does much of their controversial overseas operations. It's now the "U.S. Training Center Inc." (Which doesn't exactly mesh with "Xe," but whatever.)
And reminds us;It's not hard to guess why Blackwater (or wait, Xe) wants to get out of the private security business. In 2007, Blackwater guards opened fire in a Baghdad square, killing 17 Iraqis. Five ex-Blackwater guards were charged with voluntary manslaughter and are awaiting trial.
Now, I suspect all the subscriber's to Mercenary Illustrated probably have boners, a new whiff of mystique, about this, even if they do have trouble pronouncing the new name.
And recently, thanks largely to that incident and other cases where Blackwater has been accused of using excessive force, the Iraqi government declined to renew the company's contract to operate in the country. Soon after, the State Department announced that, in any case, it wouldn't renew Blackwater's contract to operate in Iraq.
But I don't know ...
This may very well turn into the Military-Industrial Complex's version of "Who's On First"
Who's On First?

Harwood Wrestles Hayes For Cheney Fluffer Position
Whoa, boy, the balls' in Stephen Hayes court now, for sure.
Thinking perhaps, with the former Shadow President, running all over town, proverbially shouting "I'm innocent, I'm innocent", would have the long standing Cheney Fluffer in good stead.
A few 15-minute phone calls, pumping up his idol, Hayes could coast for weeks, or as long as this "My Sister/My Daughter", "I'm shocked to find gambling going on here" prattle over the Bush Grindhouse Torture Policy rages on.
Ah, but along comes John Harwood, given his "Letters of Transit" from the Murdoch Street Journal, by the NYT, throws down some serious lavish, such that, it is entirely likely, causing Hayes anxiety attacks today, perhaps even having Hayes' new colleague, John King, thinking up even easier softballs to lob at the former exposer of covert CIA agents, should he stroke his ego again.
Exit Growling - Dick Cheney: The Visible ManBut on the issue of terror investigations, which dominated last week’s headlines, more than the others, Mr. Cheney remains a commanding figure on the right. Mr. Cheney’s defense of brutal interrogation techniques like waterboarding still resonates for many within his party. And by leading the counterattack, Mr. Cheney “relieves Republicans of the newer generation from having to fight old fights,” said Ed Gillespie, a former Bush White House official and Republican National chairman.
Yeah, vested interests like a War Crimes Trial, and, potentially, getting his future medical treatment for that bionic heart of his in a prison hospital.
Mr. Graham credits Mr. Cheney with causing the normally steady new president to wobble on his stance concerning a possible Congressional inquiry into the Bush’s administration’s handling of terror suspects. After Mr. Cheney called publicly for declassification of memos he contends show the benefits of “enhanced techniques,” Mr. Obama took a tougher line against an investigation, though he earlier appeared to have left the door open for one.
[Snip]
Some veterans of the Bush White House say Mr. Cheney had little choice but to speak out given the barbs directed his way by Mr. Obama, who — in a pointed rejoinder to the Bush administration’s interrogation policies — said, “we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.”
And there is also the matter of history. Mr. Cheney’s vocal defense of the national security policies he did so much to create seems to reflect his determination to retain a measure of control over the narrative of the Bush years, though in fact Mr. Bush himself began to reassess Mr. Cheney and his counsel. In his second term, Mr. Bush leaned more heavily on the advice of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He also dismissed Mr. Cheney’s longtime colleague Donald Rumsfeld as defense secretary. And — in a direct blow to Mr. Cheney — Mr. Bush declined to pardon his onetime chief of staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby Jr., after Mr. Libby was convicted of lying to a grand jury and to F.B.I. agents investigating the leak of the identity of a C.I.A. operative.
“Dick’s a true believer,” said Thomas Cronin, a political scientist at Colorado College who has known Mr. Cheney since both began their careers in Washington four decades ago. In some ways, Mr. Cronin added, “He has more vested interest in this than George W. Bush.”
Steve M., over on No More Mister Nice Blog, also noted the extensive fluffing Harwood is practicing;Opening sentence of John Harwood's article on Dick Cheney in the New York Times Week in Review section:
And BagnewsNotes calls attention to the photo used to accompany Harwoods' foray into Cheney Fluffing.
Dick Cheney became a one-of-a-kind vice president for two reasons: he cared deeply about governance, and not a bit about his future political standing.
Wow. Don't you just love that? Cheney "cared deeply about governance." Yup -- kinda the way Timothy McVeigh "cared deeply" about the power balance between ordinary citizens and the federal government, or Eric Rudolph "cared deeply" about the decline of traditional morality, or Bull Connor "cared deeply" about law and order.
[Snip]
Oh, and there's one other possible explanation -- Cheney can't not attack Obama! Obama's forcing him to attack!
Your move, Stephen Hayes.

It's A Rummy World, After All ...
I suppose, we can update this now;“You go to war with the torture program you have—not the torture program you might want or wish to have at a later time ..."
In, what will be likely, just another one, in a long line of "I'm shocked ... Shocked to find gambling going on here", a Senate Committee Report lays the torture of detainees on the desk of ol' Mister Snowflakes.
Bipartisan Report: Rumsfeld Responsible for Detainee Abuse; Senate Committee Finds Officials Made Decisions That Led to Offenses Against PrisonersA bipartisan panel of senators has concluded that former defense secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other top Bush administration officials bear direct responsibility for the harsh treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, and that their decisions led to more serious abuses in Iraq and elsewhere.
Nice touch, using Rummy's own words to throw back in his face.
In the most comprehensive critique by Congress of the military's interrogation practices, the Senate Armed Services Committee issued a report yesterday that accuses Rumsfeld and his deputies of being the authors and chief promoters of harsh interrogation policies that disgraced the nation and undermined U.S. security. The report, released by Sens. Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), contends that Pentagon officials later tried to create a false impression that the policies were unrelated to acts of detainee abuse committed by members of the military.
"The abuse of detainees in U.S. custody cannot simply be attributed to the actions of 'a few bad apples' acting on their own," the report states. "The fact is that senior officials in the United States government solicited information on how to use aggressive techniques, redefined the law to create the appearance of their legality, and authorized their use against detainees."
Can't you just see him, squinting, trying to understand this report, making one of his twisted faces, a real, harsh, "You don't know what you're talking about" distortion?
Likely, though Cheney's Weekend Armageddon partner saw this one coming.
That may be why, earlier this year, he called for a new U.S. Propaganda Agency.
Always The Thinker ... Gotta stay one step ahead of 'em...
Expect, in the coming days or weeks, for Rummy to make the grand Fixed News Network tour, touting up the failed policies, and defending his "enhanced interrogations".
They'll yuk it up, blame the report on some administration "dead enders" and shrug it off as "stuff happens".
Perhaps, at his future War Crimes Trial, stuff will happen, the prosecution using some "enhanced justice" against him.
How do ya like them apples, Rummy?

Minced Garlic - Keith Olbermann Special Comment: Where are the checks, balances?

No doubt, with all that campaigning - for candidates that don’t want to be seen with him - President Bush hasn't had much time to be working “The Google” - or to place more documents on the web that shows how to build a nuclear weapon.
If he had, he probably could have looked up all the reasons he’s told us over the past few years on why we invaded, and are occupying Iraq - Just like our anchor-hero, MSNBC’s ‘Countdown’ host, Mr. Keith Olbermann, with his Special Comment earlier this evening, ‘Where are the checks, balances?’
Not overlooking the “I’m-Shocked-Shocked-To-Find-Gambling-Going-On-Here” coincidence of the Saddam verdict being announced two-days before the Midterm elections, Olbermann rattled them off, peeling them like an onion and throwing them down at the feet of our Liar-In-Chief.
Is the conviction of Saddam Hussein the reason you went to war in Iraq?
Or did you go to war in Iraq because of the weapons of mass destruction that did not exist?
Or did you go to war in Iraq because of the connection between Iraq and al-Qaida that did not exist?
Or did you go to war in Iraq to break the bonds of tyranny there, while installing the mechanisms of tyranny here?
Or did you go to war in Iraq because you felt the need to wreak vengeance against somebody, anybody?
Or did you go to war in Iraq to contain a rogue state which, months earlier, your own administration had declared had been fully contained by sanctions?
Or did you go to war in Iraq to keep gas prices down?
Funny, as Olbermann delves into, in the final days of campaigning, Oil comes into play, as our Court-Appointed President now offers we have to “Stay The Course”, if only to keep the Oil Markets stable, and out of the hands of “terrorists”
Having frightened us, having bullied us, having lied to us, having ignored and rewritten the Constitution under our noses, having stayed the course, having denied you’ve stayed the course, having belittled us about "timelines" but instead extolled "benchmarks," you’ve now resorted, sir, to this?
We must stay in Iraq to save the $2 gallon of gas?
After reminding the President (as well as anyone viewing) that the Founding Fathers of this country set the whole works up with “checks and balances” (A House of Representatives would be the people's eyes. A Senate would be the corrective force on that House. An executive would do the work, and hold the Constitution to his chest like his child. A Supreme Court would oversee it all) to which this President, and his administration, has roundly ignored, we, the people still hold a card in the game;
Voting.
Get out there tomorrow and cast it, before Bush has time to get back on “The Google” and throws another one out there.

"I'm Shocked, Shocked To Find Gambling Going On Here! ... You're Winnings, Mr. Allawi"
Oh What A Tangle Web We Weave ...
Boy, that didn't take long.
We go from Saturday, when Bush Grindhouse puppet, Ayad Allawi, pens an Op-Ed in the Washington Post with his plans for Iraq, to today, with a report that the he's getting a big push from some Right-Wing heavy hitters.
Gee, I wonder if there was a connection?
Think Progress has the 411 here.
TPMmucker has it here.
Barbour Griffith & Rogers are the pushers ... Funny coincidence, a firm started by the former head of the RNC, and now, the Governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, who also happens to be a big time GOP crony, getting behind the Bush puppet.
Didn't notice that in Baker-Hamilton Report.
Didn't see a section that said to "Replace present Iraqi Government with the lackey puppet you tried installing right after your illegal invasion".
But wait, there's more.
Juan Cole has a report of a possible Military Coup in the offing, which, by the looks of it, doesn't put the Barbour poster boy in the big chair.
And, yes, all this is playing against the backdrop of the latest NIE Report released today released today, indicating high violence and low government in Iraq over the next year.
Sounds like The Commander Guy should have been quoting from the late Graham Chapman, and the rest of Monty Python, and not Graham Greene.

Retro Garlic: Is Monica Goodling Just Like Batman?
Maybe it will take another day, or two.
Some Right Wing Freak Show blog, or publication - perhaps the Wall Street Journal, again - will run an essay comparing the newest Brokeback Batman, err, The Dark Knight, to Monica Goodling.
After all, in her Pat-Robertson-educated mind, she was fighting for the American Way.
She could be equally tough and ruthless, coming out with The Commander Guy's "You're either with us, or against us" ethos, asking prospective Justice Department hirees "What Is It About GWB That Makes You Want to Serve Him?"
Oh boy, is that a loaded question ...
(Knowing, during the Bush Regime, the Republicans healthy, lusty carnal appetites, I wonder if anyone answered that question with "the twins")
So, you ask, why is this Lady Injustice back in the news again?
Well, yesterday, The Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility released findings on the investigation of how Crony General Alberto Gonzales, and his cronies Monica Goodling and Kyle Sampson, stacked the deck at the Justice Department (turning it into the Injustice Department), by skewing the hiring, dumping qualified candidates because they didn't Goose Step to the Bush Grindhouse, and hiring lame GOP lackeys for career positions. In sum, we concluded that the evidence showed that Goodling violated both federal law and Department policy, and therefore committed misconduct, when she considered political or ideological affiliations in hiring decisions for candidates for career positions within the Department. In particular, the evidence showed that she considered political or ideological affiliations in deciding several waiver requests from interim U.S. Attorneys, in promoting several candidates for career positions, and in disapproving a candidate for an EOUSA career SES position
Yeah, I know, another "I'm shocked, shocked to find gambling going on here ..."
It may become easier to line up all the people, all of them, who worked in, and for, the Bush Grindhouse the past eight-years, and ask whoever hasn't broken the law, violated the Constitution and otherwise went about their work completely unethically, to take one step forward.
You could probably count them on one hand.
Now, one would think of the terrible scandal, the hours of hearings, followed up by indictments, trials and perp-walks to jail, however, you only need to remember that it is the 110th Congress in session, so, likely, this will slowly fade away, no trials, no jailbirds, just quietly falling off Nancy Pelosi's infamous table.
Anyway, the Retro Part;

Ex-Bush Mouthpiece Hearts Todd Palin
Oh my, this is tremendously embarrassing.
I mean, not that Nicole Wallace was ever some glaring, burning, brilliant light of intellect, but to be publically drooling, lasciviously panting, over Mommy Moose's husband, that really takes the cake.
When last we heard from her, she was dissing Obama, and pitching the golden virtues of the debunked Maverick's concession speech.
But, today ...
ADVISER: ‘WE WERE NEVER READY’
Nicolle Wallace, former senior adviser to the McCain presidential campaign, did little to defend Sarah Palin at a panel discussion for Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut's new book "Notes from the Cracked Ceiling" on Tuesday night. Asked if the team was "ready for anything" when they selected Palin as their nominee, Wallace replied, "We were never ready ... no one was prepared to defend her. Nobody knew anything."
[snip]
Wallace did praise Todd Palin, the former governor's husband and the so-called "first dude." Todd Palin was an "extraordinary spouse," Wallace said, adding that he will be a "great model for what the first husband will look like."
How to be professional there, Nickie ...

Lanny Davis To Cry Fox Tears
In today's "I'm shocked, shocked to find gambling going on here ..."
Lanny Davis joins Fox NewsDavis has been trending Fox News' way for some time now, first as a supporter of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman during his reelection fight in 2006 and then as a Clinton surrogate this year. During one appearance he made on the network in May, under prompting from conservative radio host Laura Ingraham about allegations of bias against Clinton, Davis said he "now know[s] what it feels like to be a Republican" and added that, in his view, Fox was the most balanced of the cable networks.
No doubt, THIS might have helped him land the gig.
We had him pegged last month, when he melted down on CNN, pissing-and-moaning, all the way;
Don't Cry For Me, Lanny Davis ...
We'll just have to wait and see what is louder - the Fox News graphics, or Lanny Davis's suits ...
