"I have never heard a candidate — never — who has received huge amounts of money from oil, from coal, from Wall Street, from military-industrial complex, not one candidate says, ‘Oh these campaign contributions will not influence me. I’m going to be independent,'" Sanders said. "Well, why do they make millions of dollars of campaign contributions? They expect to get something. Everybody knows that."
"I represented New York, and I represented New York on 9/11 when we were attacked. Where were we attacked? We were attacked in downtime Manhattan where Wall Street is. I did spend a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild," she said.
Have never seen a candidate invoke 9/11 to justify millions of Wall Street donations. Until now. @HillaryClinton #DemDebate
At the end of the debate, CBS News moderator John Dickerson gave Clinton one more opportunity to make her point. He asked each of the candidates to name a crisis they had experienced in their life that prepared them for the presidency. “Well, there are so many, I don’t know where to start,” Clinton responded, before retelling the story of her advising President Obama in the decision to launch a mission to kill Osama bin Laden.
Well, to steal from Michael Corleone, "Just when I thought she was out... they pull her back in ..."
It's the Hillary Clinton Show (co-starring husband, ex-Prez, Bill) again, as we are now in about Day Six of Hillary-as-Secretary-of-State, Def Con 5-mode.
If this is abstruse, or perplexing, and you find yourself shaking your head, saying "WTF", just fire up that TIVO in your mind, go back a few months, and cue up the Hillary Clinton Show when it was Hillary-as-Vice-President, Def Con 5-mode.
Ahhh, but there are voices cutting through the din.
There were two people that had the presidential election nailed to the wall.
One, was Nate Silver, over on FiveThirtyEight.com.
The other was Al Giordano, over on The Field.
Nearly a year before the election, Giordano laid it all out, the Obama ground troops and field game, the wave the was building (and, obviously ignored or underestimated by the Clintonistas, and later, the Dead Campaign Express).
Today, Giordano offers another flare up, hoping to get the attention of President-Elect Barack Obama;
Mr. President-Elect: Judge Abner Mikva Is Right About Sen. Clinton as Secretary of State
Here's a few snips, but go read the post, it's a good one.Like so many of those here, below, at the grassroots base that refuse to believe the noise machine that seeks to demoralize us and make a lie of your own statement, if - and we say "if" because we have never believed the noise machine's spin, and that is why you are president-elect today - but if you are at all persuaded by the pressures upon you turn your foreign policy over to a media freak show, we invoke the immortal words of Oliver Cromwell to the Church of Scotland in 1650 when it sought alliance with the Crown: "I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken."
And this;
Few are the voices - like the brave and wise Abner Mikva - with the wisdom and courage to stand up to the sycophants being rolled at present by the Mighty Wurlitzer! There are better uses and positions for someone of the undeniable talent of Senator Clinton in your cabinet, or even on the Supreme Court, but the discretion and diplomacy required of the next Secretary of State to undo the grave messes already created cannot, should not, must not be placed in the hands of someone who - even if it is through little or no fault of her own - is a magnet for the kind of media circus that the mere suggestion of her appointment has drawn already.
Do not wake up on January 21 - or soon after - with the words of the great Abner Mikva ringing in your ears, lamenting that you did not heed them when you could:
"It's more than a legal problem - there are ethical problems and appearance problems."
Put me in the camp that believes it will be disastrous to have Hillary running the State Department (Geez, just look at the way she ran her campaign, Amtrak doesn't have train wrecks as bad as that).
The Hillarylanders have already warmed up their throats, to start singing Hillary as TMFOITW, accompanied by the Grand Central Station Locker Creatures ("Hillary is back! The keeper of the light! All hail Hillary! All hail Hillary! Oh Hillary can you see by the dawn's early light...").
And, let's not forgot a most keen observation from James Wolcott, back in the primaries; For them, Hillary’s time had come, she had paid her dues, she had been thoroughly vetted, she had survived hairdos that would have sunk lesser mortals, and she didn’t let a little thing like being loathed by nearly half of the country bum her out and clog her transmission. Not since Nixon had there been such a show of grinding perseverance in the teeth of adversity, and Nixon in a pantsuit was never going to be an easy sell contrasted with the powerful embroidery of Obama’s eloquence—his very emergence on the political scene seemed like a feat of levitation. Hillary’s candidacy promised to make things better; Obama’s to make us better: outward improvement versus inward transformation. With Hillary, you would earn your merit badges; with Obama, your wings. Hillary’s candidacy was warmed-over meat loaf—comfort food for those too old or fearful to Dream.
Yes We Can, President-Elect Obama, we can do better for Secretary of State.
Give us the "Change we can believe in".
Choose someone else!

For the umpteenth-million time, Hillary Clinton lost the primary race, and she will not be the Democratic nominee for President in 2008!
Get over it, already!
The results, no matter how many times you stamp your feet, throwing tantrums, is not going to change that
Jesus ...
Wolfson penned a piece today - Smothering the Hatchet - and offered this;Senator Obama would go a long way towards healing these wounds if he were to specifically praise the accomplishments of the Clinton presidency in a line or two during his speech on Thursday. That should be painless---he isn't running against the Clinton legacy anymore, and it would probably be a good idea to remind voters that the last time Democrats were in charge of the White House, we had peace and prosperity. Similarly, he could thank President Clinton for all of the work he did throughout his life to bridge the divides in our country. This is a cause near and dear to the president's heart.
Granted, Wolfson did say the Clintons needed to do a few things, blah, blah, blah, however, clearly, he is placing the onus on Obama.
Wolfson also takes a swipe at the media, saying they're stoking all this, yet, Wolfson joins with The Politico, and Little Billy Kristol, in extending this soap opera.
And, let's not forget, just a few weeks ago, Wolfson was pissing-and-moaning about John Edwards costing Hillary the nomination.
Barack Obama shouldn't have to do jack shit, to coddle, mollify or otherwise kiss-the-asses of the Clintons, the Clintonistas, or the Grand Central Station Locker Creatures ("Hillary is back! The keeper of the light! All hail Hillary! All hail Hillary! Oh Hillary can you see by the dawn's early light...").
Bill Clinton needs to stop his sniffling, and powder his make-up.
Get'em a box of Krispy Kremes, if that's what it takes.
Yes, he played the race card in the primaries and, OMG!, Obama campaigned, dissing the Clinton Presidency!
Why would Obama diss the Clinton Presidency?
HE WAS RUNNING AGAINST A CLINTON!
A Clinton who was touting her participation in that Clinton Presidency as the reason, at 3AM, and all other times, she should be the next President!
And Hillary, herself, stoked this, with her non-concession, concession speech, and, subsequently, endorsing (if not overtly, certainly by not saying no) this cathartic roll call non-sense.
Jesus ... These people.
Here, Wolfson, is what the Clinton's need to do in Denver.Firmly, directly, redundantly, state their undying support for Barack Obama for President in 2008.
Then, they can catch a ride with Joe Lieberman, go officially join the Republican Party, and fuck off ...
Both Clintons need to address their cave-dwelling supporters, that if they, truly, are going to go out and vote for Stumblin' Bumblin' John McCain, than they need to stop referring to themselves as Clinton supporters, as Clintonistas, as Grand Central Station Locker Creatures ("Hillary is back! The keeper of the light! All hail Hillary! All hail Hillary! Oh Hillary can you see by the dawn's early light..."), and Democrats ...

Boy, Little Billy Kristol sure seems preoccupied with glass lately.
Glass ceilings, to be specific.
Just a few days ago, Little Billy, in his own toy box, The Weekly Standard, stoked the soap opera of Hillary/TMFOITW, lamenting of the Democrats "Glass Ceiling".
Obama should have picked Hillary, and not Biden and that, gosh-darn-it, those Democratic delegates at the convention should right this wrong, by nominating Hillary - not for President, but Vice President.
Perhaps, in the days that followed, Little Billy was breathing in to much Windex, even, possibly, drinking it (you know how children are), for today, in his NYT column (I still believe the NYT is doing this as a running joke), Little Billy offers the solution to this terrible wrong:
McCain should ... Must .... Choose Joe Lieberman as his running mate. And Hillary supporters could protest Obama’s glass ceiling by voting for John McCain and the Democratic Party’s 2000 vice presidential nominee.
That's right, McCain's Mini-Me vaulting up to the #2 spot, Vice Mini-Me.
I suppose, in Little Billy's world, no better champion of woman's rights, and smashing glass ceilings, than two old white guys.
As Attaturk puts it;Yes, because who would bring down the "glass ceiling" faster than another two white guys who opposed equal pay and reproductive rights?
(Nice to know the Right Wing Freak Show isn't taking the run-up to Labor Day off ... Along with Little Billy Kristol, The Politico is also carrying the GOP's water today, with their own Hillary pumping, here)
Mister Glass lived, essentially, in a comic book world, a purveyor of evil
That, pretty much, sums up Little Billy Kristol.

Well, I guess it wasn't the sexism, the media, and all the Hillary-bashing afterall.
Hillary Clinton lost because John Edwards lied.
At least, that's the latest coming from former Clinton mouthpiece, Howard Wolfson.
From ABC News;"I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would therefore have been the nominee," former Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson told ABCNews.com ... "Our voters and Edwards' voters were the same people," Wolfson said the Clinton polls showed. "They were older, pro-union. Not all, but maybe two-thirds of them would have been for us and we would have barely beaten Obama."
As The Wonkette pointed out;Of course, then there are “facts” like these: “[Obama campaign] officials never bought the argument that Clinton was the second choice of Edwards voters. Immediately after Edwards dropped out of the race at the end of January, Obama won eleven straight contests in a row.”
Nate Silver, in his "Why Howard Wolfson is Out of a Job" notes; As such, Iowa pollsters did a lot of work in trying to determine voters' second choices. And in virtually every survey, Clinton did rather poorly as a second choice: an average of several surveys in December showed that she was the second choice of about 20 percent of voters, as compared with 25 percent for Obama and Edwards (an even later version I have sitting on my hard drive showed the second-choice breakdown as Edwards 30, Obama 28.5, Clinton 23.5)
So the odds are that, if John Edwards had dropped out on the morning before the Iowa caucus, Obama would have won by more points rather than fewer.
I guess Edwards didn't get the memo.
As part of Hillary Entitlement Campaign, Edwards was duty-bound to either not have had his cheating affair, or, as soon as he did, he was required to fess up, bow out of the campaign, and demand all his supporters move over to Hillary.
Edwards needed to, before he informed his wife of his infidelity, and before he aided his wife in her illness, he should have been working 24/7 to secure the nomination for Hillary.
Jeepers! ... No wonder she went down in flames ...
Nobody was following the plans!
How the hell can you feel you are entitled to the nomination, and then have all these people dropping the ball?
What the heck is our political system coming to?
Perhaps Obama, or certainly Howard Dean, and others in the Dem Leadership, need a sitdown with Her Highness.
With Wolfson's babble, and all the talk of parades, rallies, a "cathartic roll call vote", the Grand Central Station Locker Creatures ("Hillary is back! The keeper of the light! All hail Hillary! All hail Hillary! Oh Hillary can you see by the dawn's early light...") are still holding on to the pipe dream that "something" is going to happen in Denver, and Hillary will emerge victorious, with the nomination.
It's over! ... Give it up! ... Hillary Lost!
Thomas Schaller, in Salon has it succinctly; The macro reasons for Hillary's loss are still the same: They underestimated Obama, they didn't have a plan for winning delegates in caucus states, and they were caught flat in the period immediately following Super Tuesday. None of those fatal errors can be attributed to illicit affairs covered up by a supposedly complicit media or anything else Edwards, Obama or any of the other Democratic contenders did or did not do.

Clinton to Publicly Withdraw, Support ObamaAfter a tumultuous 17-month journey, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) will formally withdraw as a presidential candidate today, publicly declaring her support for Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) for the first time since he secured the Democratic nomination.
She had the stage to do this earlier this week and simply ignored the reality, continuing to march forward.
Until she steps out there later today, a little more than a hour from now, says - in understandable, discernible, English - that she is ending (or suspending) her campaign, and directly, clearly endorses Barack Obama (and then, maybe, after a DNA test, to confirm it was the real Hillary Clinton), only then will I exhale.
As to moving ahead, it will remain to-be-seen, just how much support she puts out.
The media circus (and leave it to Hillary to require a media circus) that is gathering for this event today, the anticipation, the hype, all the stories about her still-seething supporters, adds up to a possible classic Clintonean double-back, hold-the-phone, I've-re-evaluated-the-situation, I-won-the-popular-vote, I'm-still-in-it kind-of move.

Made It Ma, Top of the Campaign! ...
Well, it seems that cinematic, movie themes were in vogue, and applied to the wrap-up of the Democratic Primary race this week,
As you know, we here at The Garlic choose the riveting 'White Heat' to frame the narrative for "Made It Ma, Top of the Campaign! ..."
And in a cool piece of writing, Erza Klein, over on The American Prospect, choose something else;Towards the end of the 1967 movie "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," Dr. John Wane Prentice, played by Sydney Poitier, sits down with his fiance's white father, played by Spencer Tracy. "Have you given any thought to the problems your children will have?" Tracy asks. "Yes, and they'll have some...[But] Joey feels that all of our children will be President of the United States," replies Poitier. "How do you feel about that?" asks Tracy, looking skeptically at the black man in front of him. "I'd settle for Secretary of State," Poitier laughs.
Rather interesting observation, no?
Written in the late-1960s, the exchange was, indeed, laughable. The Civil Rights Act had been passed three years prior. Two years before, the Watts riots had broken out, killing 35. Martin Luther King Jr. would be assassinated a year later. But here we are, almost exactly 40 years after theatergoers heard that exchange. The last two Secretaries of State were African-American and, as of tonight, the next president may well be a black man. John Prentice's children would probably still be in their late-30s. They could still grow up to be cabinet officials or even presidents, but they would not necessarily be trailblazers.
Now, if we can just keep the script for "Carrie" out of TMFOITW's hands, we may actually get someplace.

My, My, My ...
The theatrics, the anguish, it's taking to end this thing
The Most Fabulous Object In The World (TMFOITW), according to the breaking news over the past few hours, has, finally, popped her head out of her own bubble and caught a scent of the unrelenting condemnation she was receiving today, and will (we still have to wait-and-see) end her campaign on Friday and Saturday.
The WWW and Blogosphere was lit up like a Christmas tree, virtually since "The Speech" last evening.
Even the staunchest of TMFOITW supporters were bucking against her.
Now, there can be some validity to the whole notion of you can't stop a freight train on a dime, that TMFOITW couldn't put the brakes on, on a moments notice, but that does little to luminate her actions, when applied to what Hillary did last evening.
She allowed (granted, it may have been improvised, but, either way, it was specious) the campaign's mouth-that-roared, Terry McAuliffe, to introduce her as "The next President of the United States" and than TMFOITW proceeded to give, essentially, another stump speech, completely ignoring the history of the evening, of Barack Obama going over the number of won delegates to secure the nomination.
She then proceeded to egg on, to lead on, her supporters, offering no concession, no surrender, no acknowledgment that she lost the fight, ending with encouraging people to come to her website and tell her, share with her, what she should do next.
How's this for the history that was ignored by TMFOITW;
Will Bunch's Attytood - People died so tonight could happenThis is just to say how remarkable it is that a man who wasn't even guaranteed the right to vote when he was born is now the Democratic nominee for the White House -- and to say thank you to the people who fought and who even gave their lives to make this moment happen.
Keith Olbermann reported this evening that, it was only after two conference calls, one from 23 members of Congress, the other from 8 in the Senate - and that members, advisors of TMFOITW reached out to these people, imploring them to talk to her - that this outcome was arrived at.
Apparently it wasn't enough to know that Obama had won the most delegates, TMFOITW had to hear, from her colleagues, that they were not going to stand by and aid or abet TMFOITW in her attempt to hijack the nomination.
Clinton to Suspend Campaign, Endorse Obama FridayThe news that Mrs. Clinton was ending her campaign was first reported by ABCNEWS.com
WOW!
“We pledged to support her to the end,” Representative Charles B. Rangel, a New York Democrat who has been a patron of Mrs. Clinton since she first ran for the Senate, said in an interview “Our problem is not being able to determine when the hell the end is.”
The Clintonistas, particularly, Lisa Caputo, was out this evening, still banging the TMFOITW drum, explaining away her actions and behavior as no big deal, as if it we perfectly a normal occurance to have a candidate ignore the fact that they lost the election (well, there is Mini-Me., Joe Lieberman).
As many have already stated, Hillary Clinton's loss in this contest isn't the end of woman running for high office, it is, by all rights, just the beginning.
The sky isn't going to fall in if TMFOITW doesn't become president this year.
Hillary had the choice to be placed in history as a pioneering trailblazer, or a sore, delusional loser.
She'll likely attain the former, but with the latter as a footnote.
"Made It Ma, Top of the Campaign! ..."
So, a few more days of drama, more fodder for the cable news bobbleheads and then, hopefully, it's full speed ahead to the General Election.
And Stumblin' Bumblin' John McCain.
