Down Here On The Ground

Yeah, when you listen to the tune below, it was that kind of day.

It started off, reading about the Oscar Grant shooting, out in Oakland.

Man, it is sick-to-the-stomach incomprehensible what went down there.

In one of the two video angles of the incident, you can see the BART Cop, with another pinning Grant down, knee-on-neck, pull out his gun and shoot him.

Unbelievable ...

That was followed by seeing the latest revelations of the Bush Grindhouse Torture Program.

And then, the other stuff took over.

Actually, it's been a carry-over, from the past few days.

Last month's troubles with the Aunt, produced a blood test where all was not right, and her primary Doc was a bit concerned about it.

So, last week, we followed up, and had another run, and the same aspect of the blood work is still showing something not quite right.

With remnants of the head cold stirring up, for the past two days, we have been playing phone tag with the Doc, detailed discussions and a call to get the Aunt in for a check, from, preferably a Rheumatologist, or, a neurologist, for possible (more to rule out) Temporal Arteritis.

Which will be tomorrow.

Naturally, such took up a big chunk of creative and writing time, and not sure how tomorrow will play out (assuming all goes well, you can bet-your-booties that Friday, I will be anchored, writing, with the temps down near zero)

So, for tonight, another gem.

Killer, monster rendition of the classic 'Down Here On The Ground' (coming from the movie 'Cool Hand Luke').

Of the bevy of people who have recorded this, Grant Green's is the favorite here

Kick back and groove with it!

"Nothing Lost, Mr. Christian!"

Spoiler Alert!

If you have never seen the absolute riveting movie, ''The Long Good Friday', then don't watch this video

The Long Good Friday...the fantastic end! Good Quality

"Shut up you long streak of paralyzed piss ..."

I only wish someone, anyone one of the assembled media at yesterday's final press conference with The Commander Guy, stood up and fired that back at him.

And, it would have been extra bonus points for Helen Thomas to do it.

Showing his bravery, he completely snubbed the veteran reporter, perhaps one of the very, very few who actually asked the opposite kind of questions lobbed at him by Jeff Gannon.

Perhaps, flashing back to his old drinking days, the "Compassionate Conservative" was all over the place, taking no blame, no signs of remorse, remarking only that the "Mission Accomplished" banner, and some of his rhetoric, were, perhaps, disappointments.

And, right down to the end, he showed off his intellectual prowess, referring to the Coast Guard pilots who rescued the citizens of New Orleans (no thanks to The Bush Grindhouse), as "drivers".

Drivers!

Now there's a real "Commander-In-Chief" moment ... Perhaps he should have stuck around, and fulfilled more of his National Guard service.

Maybe then he would know the difference between a "pilot" and a "driver"

While this piece of turd believes he has the record to take a victory lap, right in front of him was the evidence of just how insignificant he, and his Presidency, has become.

The Bush Grindhouse had to get interns to fill the last two rows (out of seven total) of the press room, to make it look full.

As Bob Hoskin's Harold Shand scornfully mocks the American gangsters, we borrow;

"Look at you ... The President of the United States ... of shitdom!"

Smell Me, Baby!

Oh God ....

Look out for the nearest live version of a beer commercial coming to you.

And, that office Romeo just got the license to become "funkier".

This could just as well serve as a "Heads-Up" to any, and all woman, who may be hitting a disco, dance hall, or just going out clubbing.

Especially if they run into any lunkheaded men, who happen to have stumbled on this article;

Women Can Smell a Man's Intentions ...At least subconsciously, a woman can also tell a man's in the mood by the scent of his sweat

Scientists have long debated whether humans, like animals, use chemical signals called pheromones to communicate sexual interest to potential mates. Problem is, the effects of pheromones are thought to be subconscious — meaning that if we do communicate using them, we sure don't know it. It's also hard to know what these pheromones might be and how we sense them, so researchers understand little about them.

But if human pheromones are going to be anywhere, they're going to be in sweat, right? Denise Chen, a psychologist at Rice University in Houston, and her colleagues devised an experiment to compare how women respond to different forms of male sweat — sweat produced in everyday situations versus that produced when a man is turned on.
Yeah, you're reading that right, sweat.
Chen and her colleagues asked 20 heterosexual guys to stop wearing deodorant and scented products for a few days. Then they told the men to put small pads in their armpits as they watched pornographic videos and became aroused (the researchers confirmed, using electrodes, that the images did the job). Later, the guys were asked to exchange those pads for fresh pads to collect the sweat they produced when they weren't aroused.
Can't you just see some Tony Manero-types, hanging around out in front of a club, shower-less for days, sans any deodorant, fanning through porno magazines, ogling woman as they walk in, checking out their own armpits and boasting to one another, "Oh Yeah, she's gonna dig me ...Forward my mail. boys"
Then the researchers recruited 19 brave women to smell the men's pads while undergoing brain scans.
Now, getting 20 guys to watch porn, that had to be a no-brainer, but what sales pitch did they use to get the 19 woman to inhale the sweat?

"Hi ... We conducting a study and we just had a group of men pop boners and get excited watching porn, and we'd like to know if you be interested in smelling their sweat? ... No, no ... You don't have to meet the men ... You won't be sticking your nose in their armpits ...No, not down there, either ... "

Then, how many of the woman contacted for the study expressed disappointment, that they wouldn't be sticking their nose in men's armpits?

How many of them asked if they could watch porn, too?

What did they do, if any of the woman, started getting aroused - by any of the other woman, who may have been "sweating" during the testing?

Man, the extraneous notes to this study must be priceless.

One thing, for sure, we know what song will be most-requested in this sweat swap ...

Kick it, Mister DJ!

It's Not Global Warming, It's Google Warming!

In the "Now, What Do We Have To Worry About?" Department;

Revealed: the environmental impact of Google searches

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea, according to new research.

Holy Hot Search Bar, Batman!

I'm destroying the planet, just for my searching for discounted lambs wool sweaters!
While millions of people tap into Google without considering the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2 Boiling a kettle generates about 15g. “Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power,” said Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist whose research on the environmental impact of computing is due out soon. “A Google search has a definite environmental impact.”

[Snip]

Google is secretive about its energy consumption and carbon footprint. It also refuses to divulge the locations of its data centres. However, with more than 200m internet searches estimated globally daily, the electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions caused by computers and the internet is provoking concern. A recent report by Gartner, the industry analysts, said the global IT industry generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines - about 2% of global CO2 emissions. “Data centres are among the most energy-intensive facilities imaginable,” said Evan Mills, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. Banks of servers storing billions of web pages require power.

[Snip]

Nicholas Carr, author of The Big Switch, Rewiring the World, has calculated that maintaining a character (known as an avatar) in the Second Life virtual reality game, requires 1,752 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. That is almost as much used by the average Brazilian.

“It’s not an unreasonable comparison,” said Liam Newcombe, an expert on data centres at the British Computer Society. “It tells us how much energy westerners use on entertainment versus the energy poverty in some countries.”
Hmmm ... Perhaps the first volley in what will be an epic battle down the road, "the colonisation of real space by virtual space"?

Okay folks, this means you have to cut down on your searches for Jennifer Lopez's butt, or Carmen Electra, and you can wait to see the newspapers to find out the score, or latest news, from Manchester United.

And solar power your tea ...

We've got average Brazilians to save!

Still on the DL Garlic Fans, however, there are small signs of progress.

We should be back tomorrow with some regular posting, albeit, in-between shoveling, as big snow moving in tonight, and through tomorrow afternoon (followed by a week of some more snow and absolutely frigid temps - by Wednesday, we'll be lucky if we break into the teens for highs) ...

Witchi Tia To

As the various posts this week might indicate, it hasn't been an auspicious start to the new year, here at The Garlic.

Still feeling under-the-weather, though the more significant, messy parts of the Head Cold have passed, we're not out-of-the-woods just yet (and battling to keep the dreaded sinus infection at bay).

So, rather than throwing up another, bland "Editor's Note", we thought we give you a little more, something new, something different (perhaps), a bang-for-your-buck, so to speak.

We'll hip you to the first (perhaps only) American Indian Jazzman.

Jim Pepper.

From Scott Yanow's All Music Guide;

Jim Pepper will always be best remembered for his popular recording of "Witchi-Tai-To," a peyote chant put to music. Pepper, who is definitively profiled in the hour-long documentary Pepper's Pow Wow (available on video), infused advanced jazz with the influence of his Native American heritage. The son of a father who also played saxophone, Pepper early in life loved to tap dance. He largely taught himself both tenor and clarinet, developing a soulful sound and keeping his style open to both free expression and the influence of world music. Pepper grew up in Oklahoma and moved to New York in the mid-'60s. He was a major part of one of the first fusion groups, Free Spirits, which made a record for ABC/Paramount in 1967. Pepper, who played in the "Everything Is Everything" band in the late '60s, was encouraged by Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry to put more of his heritage into his music. Jim Pepper worked with Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, and his own bands. He recorded with Paul Motian and Bob Moses, and led a session apiece for Europa (1984) and Enja (1987). Pepper passed away at the age of 50 from lymphoma.

Jim Pepper, on Wikipedia;
Jim Pepper was an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and singer of Native American ancestry.

[Snip]

In his own projects, he recorded with Cherry, Naná Vasconcelos, Collin Walcott, Kenny Werner, John Scofield, Ed Schuller, Hamid Drake, and others. His CD Comin' and Goin' (1983) is the definitive statement of Pepper's unique "American Indian jazz" with nine songs played by four different line-ups. He worked also with the Liberation Music Orchestra, Paul Motian' s quintet, Bob Moses, Marty Cook, Mal Waldron, David Friesen, and Amina Claudine Myers, and toured Europe intensively.

Pepper died in 1992, of lymphoma.

[Snip]

In 1998, composer Gunther Schuller arranged, conducted and recorded The Music of Jim Pepper for symphony orchestra and jazz band. Pepper was posthumously granted the Lifetime Musical Achievement Award by First Americans in the Arts in 1999, and in 2000 he was inducted into the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame. In 2005 the Oregon Legislative Assembly honored the extraordinary accomplishments and musical legacy of Pepper.[2]

In April 2007, the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. accepted Pepper's saxophone and hat at a ceremony honoring his music and legacy.[3]

And now, the infectious 'Witchi Tia To'

Editor's Note: More Woes ...

Good Evening Garlic Fans

Boy, what a week ...

In a previous Editor's Note, we stated some of the things we were dealing with this week, and, apparently, my ebullience was premature.

I've been pinned down, and mercilessly beaten, by a Head Cold, which, in my case, with bad allergies and sinuses, it all goes straight to the sinuses ... Think shiny, gleaming prongs of a rake going on in there, coupled with prolonged periods of feeling like sneezing, but not, and you begin to get the picture.

I worked though it yesterday, but today, it was no go.

Carried through with the Aunt duties, and in- between, it was a day of stretching out on the sofa, taking cat, and power, naps, as best I could.

Hopefully, I'll have the energy (and a less-jammed-up-head) tomorrow to get some posts up (and, as I write this, news is on, with another snowstorm heading in, Saturday/Sunday, with up to 9-inches of snow - wonderful ...)

As always, thanks for coming by The Garlic ...

Peace
JTD

Johnny Jones, aka Huntley Haverstock, must be rolling in his grave.

Word comes today, that the world's most famous non-working-plumber, aka, the Stumblin' Bumblin' John McKKKain campaign's mascot, Joe The Plumber, is going over to cover the conflict in Gaza, for PajamasMedia's, PajamasTV, as a journalist.

Jesus, who over at this "Pajamas Are Us" outlet thought up this earth-shattering idea?

To stay in JTP mode, was it Izzy, the Idea Idiot? ...

Are the Flying Monkeys so stressed out, that, with the worldwide coverage of Israel's bombardment of Gaza isn't capturing the essence of the story, they have to scrape the bottom-of-the-barrel and pull out this fame-seeking fool?

Couldn't they get The Wasilla Whiz Kid, Sarah Palin, to, I don't know, stand on a chair, and look beyond Russia, to see if she could focus in on Gaza and phone in some reports?

Jeff Gannon's gotta be pretty pissed off.

He's just as good as the next fake journalist at lobbing softballs.

And, softballs is what it will be ...

From Think Progress;
"I get to go over there and let their "Average Joes" share their story, what they think, how they feel -- especially with, you know, world opinion. Maybe get a real story out there."
There you go ...Professionals, with long careers, covering numerous wars and conflicts, they aren't able to get the "real story".

With the long, twisted history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, covering decades, it comes down to this alleged plumber from Ohio to jaunt over there and dig out the "real story".

And how is he going to do it?

From Steve Benen;
Asked if he's concerned about his personal safety, he added, "Being a Christian, I'm pretty well protected by God."
That's it, throw one out to the Jesus crowd ...

No doubt, the Flying Monkeys will be riveted.

And just who is Huntley Haverstock?

None other than the protagonist/hero (portrayed by the great Joel McCrea) of one of Alfred Hitchcock's best film's, 'Foreign Correspondent'.

Here's the trailer for 'Foreign Correspondent'

Here's a themed clip, "Hats"

"It's like hearing my obituaries while I'm still here." ... Nat Hentoff's Last VV Column

We made reference to this last week, about the great Nat Hentoff being cut loose from The Village Voice.

And, yesterday, came his final column

Nat Hentoff's Last Column: The 50-Year Veteran Says Goodbye ... I used to say, 'I've been at the Voice since the Civil War.' But now I'm off to other combats

I've borrowed Woody Guthrie's 1942 song to report that this is my last column for the Voice. I'm not retiring; I've never forgotten my exchange on that decision with Duke Ellington. In those years, he and the band played over 200 one-nighters a year, with jumps from, say, Toronto to Dallas. On one of his rare nights off, Duke looked very beat, and I presumptuously said: "You don't have to keep going through this. With the standards you've written, you could retire on your ASCAP income."

Duke looked at me as if I'd lost all my marbles.

"Retire!" he crescendoed. "Retire to what?!"
The Village Voice might be dumping him off at the side of the road, but Hentoff isn't going to lay down in any ditch, but rather keep his busy schedule of writing various columns at various other publications, as well as having two new books due out very soon.

Go read Hentoff's final VV column (it's good, as usual), and poke around the World Wide Web and keep track of him, you will be well rewarded.

Editor's Note: Eureka!! ... Fixed, Finally! ... But No Joy In Mudville ...

Phew!

As you may know, if you've been reading The Garlic the past few days, we have been mired in Computer Hell, nailed (ironically, researching some articles for a post) by a Pop-Up Ad, containing the Vundo Trojan, last Friday, leaving us to a weekend of tunnel-visioned obsession with getting rid of it.

Especially after some funky things began occurring.

While MacAfee, and Microsoft security programs whacked away at it, the Trojan persisted, so today, we searched out some alternatives, testing a few with downloading and scanning, still to no avail.

That is, until we stumbled upon Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Scan, about twenty-minutes later, Trojan Be Gone!

Reboot ... All clear, no dreaded pop-ups from MacAfee that they "blocked and removed" said Vundo Trojan.

And, one of the nasty byproducts, that Microsoft Security Alert, of the Automatic Updates being turned off - Solved!

Thank You, Malwarebytes!!!

The "No Joy In Mudville" part

So, now that we have our system back, up-and-running, properly, and with a bevy of juicy news out there, begging to be riffed on, we have to say it will probably be Wednesday, when we will resume normal posting.

For, as I launched on my recovery mission early this morning, and email dropped in that our old Ding Ho alum, Bob Lazarus, had lost his battle with Leukemia last night, passing away at his home.

If you may recall, we helped promote the benefit show for Laz, late last spring, to help chop down the mounting medical costs, sending the dreaded illness into remission, allowing Laz to return to the stage and start making audiences laugh again, as well as earn his living.

Sadly, the remission was short-lived, and last month, Laz started failing, bucking up for one major stage appearance, at the Steven Wright Hall of Fame show.

You have to go over to Barry Crimmins, and read his incredibly poignant remembrance and tribute to Laz.

Nick Zaino, over on Boston Comedy - Funny Grown Here, also has a post up on Laz, and it includes some great links, including one from Mike Donovan, one of Laz's best friends.

The services are tomorrow, which we plan on attending, and with such, we have one of those intersections life springs up on us.

For tomorrow is the birthday of the Aunt I write about so often, her 96th.

So, while it is not written-in-stone that I don't get a post, or two, up tomorrow evening, I wouldn't rush out to Vegas and lay down any cash on it either.

We look forward to Wednesday.

Editor's Note: Just When I Thought It Was Fixed ...

Good Evening Garlic Fans

Another lost day, to scanning, and scanning, and scanning, with still, no clear resolution.

Apparently, I had encountered a "Trojan" program, or, a Microsoft Security Program has gone awry, and that is messing with my system, to some degree.

I am not inoperable, however, it does, and is doing, things it should not do.

So, rather scramble to put up something lame, as I have eschewed most of the outside world today, we will continue to endeavor to correct this problem - so I can live in peace again (or, until the next time a Microsoft issue wants to torture me).

There's plenty of items down the left sidebar to chew on, or visit some friends, over on The Reaction, Barry Crimmins, or Boston Comedy - Funny Grown Here.

Peace

It Only Took One To Spoil This Soup

Fans (if there are any ...More on that below) of actor/comedian Dane Cook gasped this past week, on the news that Cook's half-brother, and erstwhile manager, ripped him off for millions.

Dane Cook's kin accused of stealing millions from comic

Darryl McCauley, 43, is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Woburn District Court on charges of larceny, forgery, and larceny by continuous scheme. He was arrested at his Wilmington home yesterday by State Police.

The state attorney general's office, which investigated the case, would not identify McCauley as Cook's brother yesterday, only saying that he stole from a national entertainer with local ties.

However, Cook's friends and state documents identify McCauley as his half-brother and as an official with his company, Great Dane Enterprises, Inc.
Surprising (again, more on that coming) that Cook has earned "millions", plural.

He was paying McCauley $150G's, per year, and got caught, when he was "recently replaced by a California-based manager. Despite repeated personal requests from Cook, McCauley refused to turn over Cook's financial records ...".

Probably, a little Bernie Madoff paranoia in play, no doubt.

Essentially, this is your average, "happened-before" sob tale of big entertainer/sports hero/otherwise celebrity bringing in the bacon by the truckload and not paying attention to where was being stored.

This writer has never been a particularly big fan of Cooks' "humor".

We never fretted that Cook was over-burdened with the worrisome problem of having "too much talent".

And, it appears, a fair number of others thought likewise.

In both stories that we linked to here, in the Comments section, Cook gets absolutely roasted, with the main themes being he was over payed, and that any money recovered should go to the people who paid money to see him perform.

A few samples;
"This man should be applauded. Dane Cook stole the money in the first place by being overpaid and unfunny. It's a modern day Robin Hood story, if you ask me. McCauley was stealing from the rich and giving the money back to the poor moviegoing public that wasted their hard earned money on one of Cooks' films or CD's."

"Fitting that this has happened to the biggest joke thief in the industry!"

"I youtubed this Cook person. Is there something funny about him? I couldn't find one bit that was funny. It's all so silly and juvenile. Instead of his half-brother or step-brother...whichever, they should go after the people who over-paid him for crap comedy."

Thank God! I love the previous comments about how un-funny this hack is!! People are such sheep, if you tell them someone is funny they just fall in line and gobble up his crappy comedy. Dane must have incriminating pictures of someone that lets him keep "entertaining"
Ouch!!

You can read the comments HERE and HERE.

Good luck there, Cook, in making back that lost money.

Editor's Note ... Techinical Difficulties

Sorry, Garlic Fans, for the big goose egg as to posting yesterday.

We got caught up in some major, pain-in-the-ass, computer trouble, perhaps a "Trojan", that somehow cracked through the crack security system (Thanks Microsoft and MacAfee!).

I was, happily, tooling along, writing, reading, putting together a few things, with multiple tabs opens (three), and then, all-of-sudden, things froze up. It took an extremely lengthy time to do any action, liking closing the tabs, either due to this unspecified, possible "Trojan", or that Microsoft decided it was time to "Synchronize" my folders.

It took over an hour to get everything closed up, and then I began running the various scans and defrags, which chewed up another couple of hours.

At that point, creativity took the first train elsewhere and I decided best thing was to just chill out (I watched two movies, one that was absolutely, dreadfully awful, 'We Own The Night' - miss it by all means, if you can ... The first 10-minutes show promise, and then if just drops over the cliff the rest of the way).

So, today, we play catch-up.

Peace
JTD

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

All things considered, we're not sure just how much happiness is coming in with the sashed-wrapped New Years' baby.

And, where we write from on this new day, it's about 12-degrees, accompanied by 30-MPH winds, producing a -15-degree wind chill, so there's little happiness in walking out the front door (which is adorned with the fresh 6-inches of snow from yesterday).

It "warms up" to about 30 tomorrow.

Enough of that, today's a day of parades, bowl games, polar bear club members jumping into icy waters, Mummers Parade (you have to wait until January 18th for the classic, irreverent, Doo Dah Parade), special concerts, and, of course, for many, the nursing of hangovers.

So, whatever you are doing today, no matter how 2008 played out for you, we have, we believe, the tune that can assuage you for 2009, carrying you forward, a call to perseverance and optimism, of gratitude, and believing in yourself.

It comes via a collaboration between Joe Cocker and The Crusaders, appearing on The Crusader's album, 'Standing Tall', and was nominated for a Grammy in 1981.

Our New Years' gift to you - "I'm So Glad I'm Standing Here Today"

Enjoy! ...

And, Happy New Year!
